Thayer: 'You Have To Attack Michael Vick'

Earlier this week Lovie Smith went on record and said that he wouldn't change his defense . He believes that his defense can stop the Eagles' offense and that it's set up to stop players like Michael Vick.

"I think Lovie is telling the truth," Bears analyst Tom Thayer said on the Mully and Hanley Show. "The Bears are going to do what they do. They're going to be aggressive. they're going to play the run really well. They're going to try and take the opportunity to blitz and they're going to play the cover two defense and over the long haul of a whole game they're going to make the quarterback beat you."

But so far this week the debate hasn't been whether or not the Bears would change the defense to spy Vick. The debate has been whether or not they should.

"I don't think you spy Michael Vick," Thayer said. "Because if you leave someone standing six yards on the other side of the line of scrimmage, if he decides to run you're not going to catch him anyway. So there's no reason to go lateral along the line of scrimmage and let him sit back there, [and then] bam, find a big play opportunity."

"You have to attack Michael Vick. You have to make him think football at a rapid rate. But Michael Vick has shown this year that he is much better at the intricacies of the passing game."

While it is possible to stop Michael Vick, the best way to defend against him might be keeping him off the field all together. And that responsibility would fall onto the shoulders of the Bears' offense.
