Semi Rolls Over, Spills Fuel Onto Bishop Ford

Updated: 12/02/10 3:53 p.m.

CHICAGO (STMW) - A rolled-over semi truck spilled diesel fuel on the Far South Side and temporarily closed all inbound lanes of the Bishop Ford Expressway late Thursday morning.

The accident happened on inbound I-94 near 130th Street at about 11:20 a.m. and left diesel fuel spilled on the roadway, Illinois State Police District Chicago troopers said.

The Fire Department issued a Level I HazMat alarm at 11:28 a.m. because of the spill but secured the alarm at 11:35 a.m. after finding no additional fuel leaking, Fire Media Affairs spokesman Quention Curtis said.

The truck's driver told State Police the accident happened as he was leaving a turn and trying to straighten out, then saw his back trailer swinging out to the side, the trooper said. The semi ended up on its side.

An ambulance was standing by, but no one was reported injured, Fire Media Affairs spokesman Richard Rosado said.

Officials could not immediately say how much fuel spilled, but said no citations are expected to be issued.
