They came for the ice, and the fish. What some fishermen found was fire, and a sleeping family.

HOLIDAY HILLS, Ill. (AP) – A pair of ice fishermen alerted a sleeping family to a fire in their burning Holiday Hills home.

The Chicago Tribune reports that the fishermen were going to their fishing hole early Sunday when they saw the smoky house in the McHenry County village. The men ran to the home screaming “fire.” Fire officials say no one was injured in the fire but the home may be a total loss.

Firefighters were able to save some Christmas gifts under the family tree.

Authorities say preliminary information shows the fire may have been electrical and caused by a lamp. The blaze is under investigation.
