Glenview Fire Chief Wayne Globerger said that the victim was working on an entrance on the west side of the hospital campus, just off of Pfingsten Road in Glenview.

"They were hanging some type of canopy over the doorway and at some point, something fell and hit him," Globerger said.

The initial 911 call indicated that the victim was trapped beneath a steel beam, but the beam had been lifted off of the man by the time firefighters and paramedics arrived at 1:24 p.m., three minutes after the initial call.

Paramedics found the man in full cardiac arrest and Globerger said that neither they nor hospital emergency room personnel could revive him.

Work is stopped at the site. Investigators from OSHA and the Illinois Department of Labor will try to determine what caused the beam to fall.
