CHICAGO (CBS) – Chicago police officers shot and killed a dog Thursday morning while responding to a domestic disturbance in the South Shore neighborhood.

Officers were called to a domestic disturbance shortly after 6 a.m. in the 7400 block of South Chappel Avenue, police said. When they arrived, they were forced to shoot and kill a dog that was threatening them.

“If an animal poses an immediate threat to the safety of an officer or another individual, an officer may take appropriate measures to defuse the threat,’’ Police News Affairs Officer Darryl Baety said.

No one was injured and Baety said he did not know what breed of dog was shot.
