Man Found Buried In Woods Was Shot To Death

CHICAGO (STMW) -- A man found decomposed and partially buried in a wooded area Friday afternoon in the East Chicago neighborhood was murdered, an autopsy found Saturday.

A man in the 2500 block of East 116th Street smelled a bad odor about 3:30 p.m. Friday and found a decomposed body when he searched for the source of the smell, police News Affairs Officer Daniel O'Brien said.

Sources said the body was covered by branches in a wooded area. The man saw gym shoes sticking out and left the area to call police.

The man, believed to be in his 40s, suffered multiple gunshot wounds and the death was ruled a homicide, according to an autopsy performed by the Cook County Medical Examiner's office. He remained unidentified Saturday afternoon.

Calumet Area detectives are investigating.
