Gas Tax Hike May Be Coming In Indiana
INDIANAPOLIS (CBS) -- Gas prices have been skyrocketing across the country, but for some people in Indiana, they soon could be even higher thanks to a tax hike.
Right now, the fuel tax in Indiana is 18 cents per gallon. But some state officials say Indiana has lost millions of dollars in gas tax revenue in the past few years.
They say a tax hike is the only way for the state to keep up its roads.
The last gas tax increase in Indiana was in 2002.
By contrast, in Illinois the gas tax is more than twice as much as in Indiana, at 39 cents per gallon.
