Don't Miss This

By Dan Bernstein–

If Brian Kelly wants to kill another Notre Dame student, he’s gonna have to be more creative.

His preferred method – placing them high in the air on a scissor-lift during historically-dangerous windstorms — has been taken from him by school officials who don’t think Kelly will ever be capable of reading the warnings on the side of the machines.

Now, the football program will use high-tech, remote-operated cameras to film practice, with human videographers only allowed to be stationed on fixed structures.

Athletic Director Jack Swarbrick, the man who believed that 52 MPH gusts and the lowest non-hurricane barometric pressure ever recorded in the continental US could be classified as “unremarkable,” is just so excited to have a newfangled system that will bypass his coach.

“In bringing its tremendous technology expertise to the table, XOS [Digital] has worked hand in hand with our football program to form a partnership that now provides a new method of obtaining video materials that our coaches and players utilize,” he said.

In other words, there are two investigations ongoing, one by the school itself (can’t wait for those results) and one by the Indiana Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Time to look like we’re doing something before we’re finally forced to write big checks.

If the lifts themselves are the danger, why not ban their use everywhere, then? Will other ND athletic programs be trusted to use them for filming practices and games? Will the school’s maintenance staff still use them to reach things around campus that need fixing, or will they have to find new, fancy ways to reach overhead wires and pipes, or areas that need a new coat of paint?

Churches have high ceilings, you know.

There was no nationwide recall of these killer devices, since nearly everybody else in the world isn’t careless enough to use them in adverse conditions despite of clear instructions not to. Scissor-lifts are everywhere, and they rarely get blown over.

Notre Dame is a school that has embraced the responsibility of in loco parentis – Latin for “In the place of a parent.’’ It is used to describe the role a university plays when students leave home to become a part of the campus community.

In this case, Notre Dame is living up to that by parenting Brian Kelly.

The head football coach is being told “If you can’t play with your toys safely, we will take them away from you.”

No pointy, big-boy scissors for you, Brian. You use the ones with the rounded tips and the big, plastic handles.

Swarbrick can try to sell this any way he wants, blathering technical gobbledygook to hide the embarrassment and liability. He’s in this, too, however.

No celebration of space-age cameras hides the fact that he and the school’s nebulous bosses clearly don’t trust their best-known, most visible leader to keep this from happening again.

  • Larry Horse’s Arse

Oh, thanks for the clarification…I had thought that ND banned “scissoring”.

  • Chris in Scottsdale

“If Brian Kelly wants to kill another Notre Dame student, he’s gonna have to be more creative.”

    That’s cold, man.

    • Denver Deadite

      But true.

I mean, they’ve also already let a player lead a female student of a neighboring college to commit suicide.

What’s some more blood on the hands at this points?

      • Larry Horse’s Arse

What bothers me about all this Deadite is that ND football players can be very sensitive……some even cry during sex, when the pepper-spray kicks in.

    • Peter (in Rogers Park)

An a helluva challenge too. The scissor-lift-in-gale-force-wind method was pretty creative by most standards, I thought.

  • bigtime sucker

i could have wrote this article and saved dan from his impending carpel tunnel syndrome it’s really simple

title: Notre Dame doesn’t trust Brian Kelley

    article: Would you?

    end of article

    • Larry Horse’s Arse

bts, you hit the bullseye again.

BK is on a very, very short leash.

The only way he gets a longer leash is with (1) no more scandals and (2) BCS Bowl victory.

      • Meatless Meatball

Let’s be honest, Larry… It’s not so much about whether Kelly is involved in any more scandals; it’s about whether or not he gets caught. Does anyone really doubt that there are probably six other scandals with his team that’ve been suppressed by Swarbrick and the ND goons?

      • Larry Horse’s Arse

Thank you MM….that’s really what I should have written if I had thought a bit more carefully. You are 100% correct.

  • Jon

    Tuesday – Cubs Bashing
    Wednesday – Christianity Bashing
    Thursday – Notre Dame Bashing
    Friday – A Grave Stomp?

Your blogs have been garbage the past few days Bernstein, get off your soapbox and talk some real sports. Baseball is starting, and
we have two damn good teams playing at the United Center right now.

    • Mark, Sterling

Sour grapes from a Notre Dame or “christian” fan? Little truth getting under your skin?

      • Jon

I’m a lapse Catholic and anything but a ND fan, just getting tired of Danny’s schitck.

      • Chris in Scottsdale

Yesterday’s blog wasn’t Christian bashing- it was bashing the abuse of Christianity for personal gain.

I’d ask you to read it again, but it doesn’t appear you read it once.

…And you forgot Monday’s blog: Heat bashing! Stab-in-the-dark here, but are you not a Heat fan? I’d wonder why you omitted it, but not really.

    • bigtime sucker

right now, things are good at the UC, other than worrying about Boozer, Campbell and Brower’s health, there really is no fire starter kindling there(which is the intent of Bernsteins article). I guess the hawk’s first period woes but that’s a reach.

btw who won that dallas flames game last night

    • Spoon

Breaking news: Bernstein rips on people that do dumb things in his blog, someone gets indignant. Details at 11!

  • Denver Deadite

“If the lifts themselves are the danger, why not ban their use everywhere, then?”

Because most people CAN read the warning labels.

But then, this is ND. They always knows best, right?

    • Larry Horse’s Arse

The ONLY other place I have seen them on campus is INSIDE the Basilica of the Sacred Heart (repairs, light-bulbs etc.). There the maintenance employees are not subject to 60+ mph winds!

      • Denver Deadite

But they are then subject to touchy-feely priests, which isn’t a very good trade off.

      • Murphs Upper-Lip

Used these lifts extensively, inside and out. Never once fell over.

      • Spoon

I’ve used them a handful of times while my grandfather had his construction company, but never as high up as they were putting that kid.

    • bigtime sucker

well apparently touchdown jesus was supposed to catch him if anything were to happen, so much for the luck of the irish. Bottom line, this is about accountability or lack thereof. When the success of your top reveunue producer becomes top priority, they will allow the facilitator of that revenue producer some lattitude. What i don’t remember was whether or not B Kelley intimidated that poor kid onto the scissor lift or not. I guess if i were the kid, i would have walked away and reported kelly to the dean or AD. I doubt kelly would have been punished but i am pretty sure the kid would have been allowed to keep his job

      • Spoon

“I guess if i were the kid, i would have walked away and reported kelly to the dean or AD. I doubt kelly would have been punished but i am pretty sure the kid would have been allowed to keep his job”

Doubtful. Kelley would have had him dismissed and a new guy would have been fighting for the position in a matter of minutes. Don’t get me wrong, I would have done the same thing, but once Kelley says ‘I’m done with him” he’s out of a ‘job’.

  • crash corrigan

You buried the lead again, Bernstein. It’s the robots! The robots are taking over! Can’t you see that? Can’t any of you see that? The robots! We’re all doomed!

    • LC D

Hopefully Sarah Conner is an ND fan and son John can save Brian Kelly from the “Robots”. The fact that ND promotes the adoption of “said” cameras as groundbreaking use of technology only magnifies the fack that they are all idiots and are covering for Sargent Kelly. I remember the winds from that day, distinctly, and still can only think that only a moron would have sent a kid up in winds like that. Notre Dame—Hope it was worth a kids life to film your average football team???

  • Beverly Brewmaster

Well that was pretty much what I was going to write up for WYC this afternoon… Back to the drawing board!

    • Larry Horse’s Arse

      Bev Brew:
Every now and then I have thought to send in an e-WYC but did not have the e-mail address……could you post that for us? Thanks.

      • Chris in Scottsdale

        Bernstein, Daniel
        boersandbernstein@670thescore.com

Oh, and anyone else seen Omer’s wiki page? Looks like someone’s got themselves a handful!

      • Larry Horse’s Arse

        Thanks Chris.

      • kev in skokie

Good catch Chris, that is funny! The look on his face completes it.

  • bigtime sucker

    thanks for the compliment
but here’s the strange thing, if my son was an outstanding student, i would have no problems sending him to Notre Dame(well ok, i can’t afford it, but from a “hey, it’s a great school standpoint, no problems at all). Heck, if he was a basketball talent, no problems at all or a soccer player or well you get the point. I just would never eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeever let him play football there at all. I would push for U of I ,Northwestern, Northern or heck even Eastern over ND. But if he is on that level, that decision is ultimatly his, but i would definatly overstate my opinion

    • Larry Horse’s Arse

My son was one of those 1600 SAT kids and was admitted as a “Notre Dame Scholar”. He was paid $10/hour to tutor jox in Calculus. He said that the hoops and baseball and swimming and track and etc. etc. were all nice kids who would try, but that the football players were self-absorbed entitled asshats.

    • Larry Horse’s Arse

To be fair, that was all during the Frontbutt era.

      • Meatless Meatball

Meh, that’s essentially what I’ve seen at most schools for their biggest sports. I used to help basketball players at DePaul in English and Religion. I’ve never met so many people who wear crosses but can’t even tell the difference between Sts. Peter and Paul, let alone write a coherent paragraph about them

      • SPAULDING!

        heh heh,

        “frontbutt.”

        heh heh

    • Larry Horse’s Arse

Not sure if any of the dePaul starting 5 would have been able to write a coherent paragraph about Peter and Paul “Mounds” no less the Saints.

Also not sure how many comprehend that the name of their university is not Chicago slang…as in de Bearz, de Boo, de Sox…..so some guy named Paul musts given a lot of loot to start the school, huh?????

  • dmmcg

Absolutely irresponsible journalism. To make light of the death of a student in this manner is totally uncalled for. “if he wants to kill another student …. Are you kidding me? You should be fired for your comments and your employers should be boycotted for condoning this trash journalism. If you think you’re funny, you have a sick sense of humor. Shame on you.

    • Denver Deadite

“If you think you’re funny, you have a sick sense of humor.”

‘Tragedy is when I cut my finger. Comedy is when you walk into an open sewer and die.’ – Mel Brooks

I have a sick sense of humor, and I’m proud of it. Shame on me? Hardly.

    • Meatless Meatball

So why don’t you lead the boycott rather than leaving comments? Maybe you can even rent out a highway billboard.

    • Spoon

“To make light of the death of a student in this manner is totally uncalled for”

      lolwut?

Reading is truly hard for some people..

      • Larry Horse’s Arse

The blog was so long that guy needed chapstik when he finished reading it all.

  • Larry Horse’s Arse

For the record, this post is now flagged “Awaiting Moderation”.

Anyone see anything offensive here…..shame on me for being serious for a moment and praising the good character of many of our fellow posters.

    • Larry Horse’s Arse

I meant the one several above……don’t know why this came down here when I hit the reply button to the post to which I meant to reply.

      • kev in skokie

Although, sounds a little like Terry now, a little confused, a little desheviled… Hmm, I don’t know?

  • Larry Horse’s Arse

Is Kwame Brown a POS or what???

    • George Oscar Bluth

      Yes. Yes, he is.

      • Jaimie in Hoffman Estates

Did anyone else, see that episode of The Onion Sports Dome, where they had a Kwame Brown lottery? It was just like the regular draft lottery, but the winner( really loser) got stuck with Kwame Brown’s contract.

  • Larry Horse’s Arse

News reports say that Jerry “Facelift” Jones is joining the cba negotiations.
I see that as a good sign, a helpful step.
So far, John Mara has been the Good Cop, and that has left Jerry Jones to be the in-private deal-breaker with his fellow owners. If there is someone who can kill the deal, you need them at the table to negotiate face-to-face.
I’m not saying this will bring about a cba prior to the deadline, but it is a step in the right direction.
For what it’s worth, I have 30 years of experience in labor relations, including three years as a Mediator in cba/ULP mediations.

    • Spoon

If only old Plasticface would fall down every step in that failure of a stadium…

    • kev in skokie

Damn, I thought you were Terry! You didn’t sleepwalk through a career at the Sun Times, then continue your nap on the radio? I guess I should have known better, your comments are too lucid to come from tb…

      • Larry Horse’s Arse

Maybe I should interrupt myself and change direction several times in each sentence….and always know everything that has happened, after it actually has happened, based on inside info from “my guy”???

      • Larry Horse’s Arse

I wouldn’t bet that Uncle Terry even knows that the Score has a website no less that Bernsie has a daily blog.

  • M. Marshall

Some more real slop from Bernstine but that’s his style. You wonder why people like Kelly or Notre Dame sue BS artists like this.

  • SHARK

They can remove those lifts all they want at Notre Dame, but it won’t bring back Declan Sullivan, the 20 year-old videographer who was killed filming football practice last fall during those incredibly strong winds. The thing that really bothered me in the aftermath of the tragedy was what I felt was a lack of responsibility & accountability from both head football coach Brian Kelly & Athletic Director Jack Swarbrick. Those lifts NEVER should have been in use on such a windy afternoon beneath the Golden Dome and why Kelly & Swarbrick still have jobs right now are mysteries in my opinion. I

  • bigtime sucker

i wonder if booz’s injury will hinder my 57 win prediction. I think taj is ready for his closeup, let’s go!!!

  • Jon, Montgomery

i just saw this for the first time today, i suggest you do not watch if you are not able to handle vicious injuries. this is a video of the zdeno chara hit on max pacioretty.

i am absolutely SHOCKED that chara was not given ANY suspension at all. it may not have been with malicious intent, but the play was as dangerous as you can get, i’m praying that max is okay.

in my opinion, chara should’ve been suspended at least 10 games. and i know why bettman didn’t suspend chara, it’s because he wants chara to be on the ice for the bruins so he can help boston battle for playoff position. and it’s disgusting. THE FACT THAT HE WAS NOT SUSPENED FOR THIS VIOLENT HIT IS A DISGRACE TO HOCKEY. i’m utterly shocked and mad at the situation that has unfolded from this. it’s a JOKE.

  • Spanky

    C’mom, Man…

  • Jaimie in Hoffman Estates

That call from Spanky was great!!

    • Jon, Montgomery

      yes it was! lol

    • Joakim’s bong

Bernsy really is a @ss hat! Telling him(Spanky) to go touch some boys was just wrong. Bernsy you really have some growing up to do, your pathetic.

      • Jon, Montgomery

terry was saying it too, not just dan

      • Joakim’s bong

Then when a caller asks him to apologize, he says “for what” Dan is really p!ssing me off

  • Coach Spoelstra

    Help me.

    • Jon, Montgomery

what, is lebron out of kleenex?

  • Jon, Montgomery

looks like travis is running the boards today

  • SPAULDING!

You could look at this as an open challenge to the NCAA to actually do something.
Someone lied about knowing about recruiting football players or illegitimate compensation. “oooooh,”
    That’s a Mad Lib sentence

Coach___________lied about____________and the _________that was found in_________. It was, allegedly, donated by________________who was a long-term booster of______________. The NCAA has decided to____________________________________ for the time being.

  • SPAULDING!

    darn, I got moderated. Great.

I’m not going to try to retype what I just said.

    Got nothing on this topic.

Go ‘hawks. Want to see if Jeff SaMARHdzja is interested in getting guys out.

  • SPAULDING!

    moderated again!

    The NCAA is depressing.

    Let’s talk about Jeff SaMAHRdzja!

    • SPAULDING!

uh oh, I might be in trouble on that one.
What did you say your name was? Lanolin?
      Uh, I guess, I type sheepishly, I wasn’t moderated.

      GO ‘CATS!

  • Larry Horse’s Arse

    Nice c.r.a.p. BevBrew.

I admit that I never heard of that lady, though.
