Mattress Fire Prompts Major Response At Loop Hotel
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A mattress caught fire at the Wyndham Blake Hotel downtown Thursday afternoon, prompting a top-to-bottom search by firefighters.
The fire was reported shortly after noon at the Wyndham Blake Hotel at 500 S. Dearborn St., according to Fire Media Affairs Dir. Larry Langford. A still-and-box alarm and Emergency Medical Services Plan 1 were called, sending at least five ambulances to the scene as a precaution.
A mattress caught fire in a seventh-floor room but was quickly extinguished by firefighters using hand pumps, Langford said. Firefighters still searched all stairwells of the hotel to ensure there were no victims and no smoke.
No injuries were reported, but the large number of fire engines caused a traffic backup near Dearborn Street and Congress Parkway, Langford said.
