Cubs Send Castillo To Triple-A Iowa

The Chicago Cubs have optioned catcher Welington Castillo to Triple-A Iowa, the team announced today.

Castillo was battling with Koyie Hill to be named the Cubs’ backup catcher.

The Cubs’ spring training roster is now down to 26 players: 12 pitchers, three catchers, six infielders, and five outfielders.

The Cubs’ 2011 season will officially start on Friday, April 1 when the team takes on the Pittsburgh Pirates on Opening Day.

Koyie Hill is strictly a defensive catcher. Another fan suggested on another site that IF Soto were to down with an injury, Castillo would be recalled AND start. I agree. He’s not far behind Hill defensively and getting at bats at Iowa is important.

This may be true, but Ilook at Hills win loss record when he caches a game and it is very impressive.

I think Quade should play Hill if Soto goes down and also play him 2 times a week when oto is well. It would benefit soto to have two days off a week to keep him strong. I would also play Hill when Soto could DH.

Yes Hill does handle pitchers well – he’d better do SOMETHING for the club. I’d consider giving him playing time when inter league play satrts. When Z is pitching, let Z hit and put in a DH for Hill. Same with when Wells is going.
