Threats Claim Nuclear Bombs Hidden All Over U.S.

CHICAGO (CBS 2) – The threats came in the mail and to date, there have been 25 letters that warn of nuclear bombs destroying America.

People who got them called the FBI and CBS 2’s Kristyn Hartman learned, the Bureau’s Chicago office is leading the investigation.

FBI Special Agent Andre Zavala said, “Yes, they alarmed a lot of people.”

Attorney Tracy Rizzo was alarmed. A number of days ago, an envelope, with a Chicago postmark and a hand-written address to her private investigations firm, came in the mail.

LISTEN: Newsradio 780’s Dave Marsett reports

The letter inside said, “The Al-Qaeda organization has planted 160 nuclear bombs throughout the U.S. in schools, stadiums, churches, stores, financial institutions and government buildings.” It also said, “This is a suicide mission for us.”

The writer, who claims to be Osama Bin Laden, tells the reader the nukes are remotely controlled. “It was clear the writer wanted to scare me,” said Rizzo, “Yes, it frightened me.” Rizzo was one of eight people in the Chicago area to contact the FBI.

Agencies in Oregon, California, Texas and Florida also got the letter with the Chicago postmark.

“There are items in the letter that lead us to believe it is a hoax,” said Zavala. “There are several demands documented that aren’t fully coherent.”

He said much of what’s in the message doesn’t add up, but in a post 9-11 world, the FBI can’t let it go – even if it does appear to be a hoax.

“The FBI investigates every element. We can’t take that chance,” said Zavala.

So, why the threats?

The writer alluded to how families in Afghanistan have to live. The FBI said it will find that writer, and when it does, he could face 5 to 10 years in prison for each letter mailed. Anyone who’s received a similar letter should call the FBI.

I would believe that North Korea has planted remote control nukes in South Korea to blackmail them into giving NK the money it needs, but none planted in America. Besides, that many nukes is billions of dollars.

  • leelee

agreed. On another issue, when Miami airport had a huge fire, I could ot find anything on any television channel about it. It was all pre-canned Liz Taylor stuff. ON CNN FOX and as well. Seems after midnight, everyone goes to bed, so they think. Lots of us out here still give a damn about our country.

    • John Galt

That’s funny because I watched the fire on Fox News while it was happening.

  • Matt

    Yellow Journalism at its finest.

    • Linda

Would explain why you think this is yellow journalism?

    • agm

      Matt you’re absolutely correct

  • goat 2

    agree with the goat

  • Matthew

quit being a baby…people acting all sensitive about the stupidest things is what has gotten American to the point it’s at now- everyone afraid to speak up because they “might offend someone.” it’s a bunch of garbage. who cares about being ‘politically correct?” it’s a made up term for people to use when it’s convenient for them…grow a set and quit complaining. the story is about nuclear bombs, right? so, show the picture. we should be notified about things like this in America…we should be told about a lot more than we are…Americans are too blind to the outside world until something drastic happens…

    • Tim

      agree with Matthew!

  • Kevin

consider the source, CBS in Chicago

    • Andrew

What good can come out of Chicago anway?

    • Bruce R

This never would have happenned if they hadn’t cancelled “24”!!!!!!!

    • beercanthick

cbs= all you see is bs

  • lensmanct

Obama spends a lot of time in Chicago…maybe he had his terrorist buddy Bill Ayers send the letters out.

    • mrgrogro

Certainly seems more likely given Bill’s track record.

    • ARCHIE

It would make sense since it’s one of the Alinsky tactics to create fear in the public. I’m sick of these Commies.

  • Kevin

enjoying that left wing kool aid?

    • joe

Don’t put him in the LEFT wing? He belongs in the Psychiatric Wing of a hospital!

    • Freedom

Read “Ghost Wars” and educate yourself.

A CIA agent who WAS THERE. Giving out names dates and times, where the CIA created and funded and trained the mujahadeen, who became Al Qaeda.

So, anyone that reads the confessions of a CIA agent describing the operations he was involved in are leftists drinking some kind of sugary drink.

Methinks you are a brainwashed moron.

Just to let you know, I am an ex Army Ranger and the farthest thing from a leftist. Facts are facts, they have no political leaning. But idiots on the other hand? Usually have rabid political opinions on things they know nothing about.

  • Hello!!

So, the bombs are controlled remotely.. but it’s a suicide mission? I guess the nukes did not come with instructions in Arabic!

    • Linda

you bring up a very good point.

    • joe

      Funny! Cause you’re right!

    • george bush

maybee they will sit on the bombs and then push the remote after yelling alah akbar? Sounds like a plan to me..

      • O

      • Bruce R

I wonder how many virgins allah has promissed if they can pull this one off????

  • LanceManly

No… it really is not. Yes; micro nukes are leathal, but use very high grade nuclear material well beyond the capabilities of al Quida. They’d first start with the kiloton boms like Hyroshima, then hydrogen then beyond. You simply can’t skip two steps and jump to “micro” nukes… it doesn’t work that way.

    • Be Afraid! Now!

You mean like on Starship Troopers?

    • Byzcat

Read “Day of Islam”. Hundreds of micro nukes were sold out of Chechnya after the fracturing of the old Soviet Union. The hope is that the weapons have degraded to the point of nor being operational.

    • zcom

Umm you are thinking of something else. Micro nukes can fit in a briefcase. Do some more research. They don’t have to make it… they can easily purchase these from other sources.

  • Watchman

160??? IF they had claimed 10-15 MAYBE but they blew with so many. Also to report publicly such nonsense is stupid and on par to screaming fire in a crowded theater. 5 thumbs down to CBS…………..

    • Sam

I think it is thru put issue. They prob made over 400 and of the 400, 240 failed. So they have 160 and hope that 50% will go off. LOL

More than likely (I have hope too) it is just some punk or thug racking up costs for the taxpayer. It still is a form of terrorism. Catch the clown and prosecute.

  • DavidA

    ooooh he got us

  • Clonan O'Brien

This is the top Headline on Drudge. I’m suprised it didnt blame Obama for the writing the letters. WASTE OF TIME

    • sdfskdjf

Oh we don’t blame Obama for this…. but Obama is still an ahole.

    Is this Onion News?

    • Kat

LOL. It kinda seems like it doesn’t it?

  • LarrytheTAR

accept some of that free ‘fire insurance’, (just in case). Jesus loves you.

  • Andy

Hey, Bin Laden, just to let you know, we’ve put a bunch of firecrackers up your butt. Just returning the favor. Have a nice day.

    • O. Bin Laden

well I guess you won’t be the only one who’s butthurt

      • Be Afraid! Now!

Obama, Dude! What’s with all the haterid (sic)?

      • george bush

All I have to say is that Bin Laden is one busy guy,I want to rename him Bin macguyver Ladin he plotted 911 now he has 160 nukes, hes eluded all branches of our government and military. He dissapeared on a mountain when we had him surrounded. He writes letters makes videos. He even gets younger on his videos. And all this from a guy who lives in a mounain in a cave living on a dialysis machine.Simply amazing!

      • Raoul Wall

        LOL George Bush!

    • Rene

      Oh, I’m SURE we’ll have ‘firecrackers up Bin Laden;s butt’ . . .

Listen we haven’t even been able to FIND the sob in the past . . . what is almost 10 years come this September?

      What a joke . . .

  • Jeff

LOL Well we know they read these comments, huh?

  • NotAChance

Everyone around you must be wearing “I’m with STUPID” shirts. They’re complaining about how sensationalized the story and headline are. They agree that the article should be written, just not by a five-year-old looking to get 1,000,000 clicks of ad revenue out of a 1,000 click story.

    • Joe Brewer - Kentucky

This. It’s not the fact that the article was written; it was the fact that the article was ORIGINALLY accompanied by a picture of a 15MT nuclear explosion with little mention of the veracity of the claims in the letters.

  • jeff

    What credibility?

    • Bill

      CBS = SeeBS

      • ARCHIE

        Good one.

  • Baaaa

It is in the Koran that they must warn us before destroying us. It doesn’t say the warning has to be coherent. How can a remotely triggered nuke be a suicide mission? If the range of the explosion exceeds the distance of the detonating cell phone.

  • ChocoCat

them? and who is ‘them’? I guess you think random nukes will make your fears go away? I am thinking it probably wont.

    • Me

Forget random, carpet bomb the whole lot of them.

  • JiminStl

160? Really? Where’d they get the fissile material? Even the worst horror stories I’ve read about former Sov suitcase nukes going missing wouldn’t account for 160 bombs–and those are likely all *well* past expiration date. Sorry, no sale here.

    • arya

just type “us funding taliban” in the internet search bar. its not a conspiracy and its nothing new. might help put it in perspective.

  • gangelo

What is ridiculous is the FBI telling the world what they investigate and what they do and do not investigate, what they can and cannot “let go”. If I were a terrorist, I would be on a threatening letter-writing campaign right now in an effort to tie up every FBI agent in the country while they investigate my bogus letter, all the while, attempting to slip in through the “back door” and deliver a real threat. Absolutely mind numbing.
