CHICAGO (WBBM) – Chicago’s first lady was on hand to present an award named after her and her husband to a marathoner who has also gone the distance in fund-raising.
Maggie Daley handed the Mayor Richard M Daley and Maggie Daley award–complete with bronzed running shoes–to a Frankfort man who raised $81,000 during last year’s Chicago Marathon.
Carl Allegretti says he was inspired to raise the money for Children’s Memorial Hospital after seeing the staff there help his son fight leukemia.

Allegretti says the boy is now excelling in school and wrestling, providing an incentive for his dad to keep running.
Allegretti says he plans to run his 65th marathon this fall–in Chicago.
Maggie Daley, who’s battling cancer herself, says she was never a runner but hopes to return to the tennis court.
The award presentation came ahead of this Sunday’s Shamrock Shuffle 8K.
Organizers say the shuffle and the marathon have raised over $70 million for charitable causes since 2002.
