Former Teacher Charged With Having Sex With Student

Updated 4/15/2011 at 9:00 p.m.

BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. (CBS) — A former LaGrange Park teacher has been charged with having sex with an underage student on multiple occasions.

Angelica Rangel, 24, is charged with criminal sexual assault for allegedly having sex eight to ten times with the student between Oct. 22, 2010, and March 31, 2011, while she was a Spanish teacher at Nazareth Academy in LaGrange Park.

Prosecutors said the incidents, which included “sexual penetration,” occurred at Rangel’s home in Justice and once in her car in North Riverside.

Rangel allegedly admitted the encounters to police after her arrest in Justice, a spokesperson for the Cook County state’s attorney’s office said. Rangel was ordered held on $150,000 bond on Friday during a hearing at the Bridgeview courthouse.

The victim’s cell phone contained photos of him and Rangel together at her home, and a photo of Rangel in a bath tub with her breasts partially exposed, prosecutors said in court.

Rangel worked for two years as a Spanish teacher at Nazareth Academy at 1209 W. Ogden, and the victim was in her Spanish class for two years, court records show. She has been fired by the school.

A statement from the school on Friday afternoon said the administration is “deeply saddened by recent events surrounding an inappropriate relationship between one of our students and a teacher. The teacher was immediately terminated after the administration learned of the situation.

“We will now focus our efforts as a management team to make sure that this never happens again and begin the process of helping our community with any healing that may need to take place,” the statement said.

On Friday, Judge Colleen McSweeney Moore set bond at $150,000 and ordered Rangel to have no contact with the victim, the victim’s family or anyone under age 18 if she is freed on bail.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 6 in Bridgeview.

Students were shocked to hear the allegations against their teacher.

“I mean, I guess it’s been going on for a long time,” sophomore Michael Straface told CBS 2’s Pamela Jones.

No answered at Rangel’s door Friday night. Neighbors who live near the teacher’s home say they’d only seen her in passing and that she’d only lived there for a year.

I really don’t see what is wrong with this, He knew what was going on when this happened…why don’t student get into trouble as well ???

    • Joe Patroni

Children or minors can not legally consent to have sex. End of story. This teacher had a duty and breached her trust with that student. In fact, it is child abuse and not sex.

      • Bob Loblaw

        Conflict of interest there Liz’

A new meaning to the word SPANISH FLY.

Imagine this were a 55 year old male teacher sleeping with a 13 year old student. How many of you would waltz into the comments saying “High five!” and “You go girl” and asking the courts to charge the girl with a crime?

    • Elizabeth

I’m sure if that was the case ppl would say “high five” etc…. but this Student was in Hugh School. They bought knew what was going on, if the Teacher is being charged I think the Student should as well.

      • janeyre

What would they charge the studen with?

      • Latrry

but this Student was in Hugh this a fredian slip ?

  • Elizabeth

the Student never claimed he was raped, so he knew what was going on the first time and then did it again a second time. If the Teacher is wrong and charged, why isn’t the Student ??????

    • Hugh Grant

Same thing happened at Hinsdale Central about 5 years ago. A male teacher had sex with a female student, not once, but multiple times. Word got out and the teacher was prosecuted. Even though this girl was fully aware of what she was doing, she cannot “consent” to sex b/c she is a minor (under 18 years of age). In other words, this is a case of statutory rape. This teacher from Naz is a moron, and should go to jail.

As for you Elizabeth, go back to HUGH school and get your facts straight.

      • Hugh Grant

Sorry PackerBacker, but I don’t sleep with kids. I’m not an expert like you.

      • PackerBacker

The age of consent in Illinois is 17, not 18 years old. Perhaps you should get your facts straight as well.

  • Dr Gspot

why can`t she just masterbate like everyone else?

    • Jenn

More disturbing, CBS needs to monitor their comments – too many pervs on the net.

  • master

Dr Gspot u should just masterbate …get some english

  • Mariah

this news article is pointless, who cares !!! the Student wasnt raped, he knew what was going on during both occasions.

  • Lilly

So your son’s being molested isn’t as bad as what happened here? Hmmm… I think I’d rather my son have consensual sex with a woman at the most 7 or 8 years his senior than be taken advantage of sexually. I’m not saying what happened here isn’t punishable, but I think it was most likely consensual.

  • Sam

I go to Nazareth Academy….this is really really sad because she is my teacher and was my role model. Nice to know what kind of people I look up too=[

  • Connie

Let’s face it. The student is still not mature enough to handle this adult situation. He was victimized. The teacher knew better and took a risk. She has jeopardized her career, her future and possibly the student’s life. Why would the student be charged with this crime? I doubt that as he gets older, he can look back at this situation and feel proud that many people were hurt by his actions. Yet he is the victim. This is a sad situation. No one wins here!

  • Gooch50

As a retired high school teacher I know how close in age you are to your students when you first begin teaching. I also know that many young teachers want to be “friends” with their students. But there is a big line that has been crossed in this case. No, she probably did not rape the student, but what she did was stupid and pretty much ended her teaching career. Being ready to accept the challenge of teaching also means being mature enough to know right from wrong and being able to maintain the trust that the schools expect from their teachers. Ms. Rangel is not as smart as she thinks she is if she thought this type of behavior could remain a secret. The first thing a young man will do with this kind of experience is share it with his friends, pictures and all. We know that most young men think with their lower brain; she being the adult should have been much smarter.

  • spartans

Ok, he/she could not consent to sex? However, they can consent and have all these babies by the time they are between the ages of 13-17. The teacher was wrong, because she is a an adult, but the kids are wrong to for having sex, making babies, and having tax payers pay for years. What are the parents teaching their kids? Oh, I forgot they got pregnant at 13 also.

To Sam from Nazareth above: You sound like your a little peeved because you didn’t get a piece of that-Boo Hoo!

  • Lastlaugh22

She was a snot nosed prissy in high school, how easily the tables turn on those who think they’re better than other people. Her and her whole klan of girlfriends thought they were superior. Who got the last laugh now. Gotta love that Argo High School hoodrat. Enjoy county!! Ha!!
