Late April Snowstorm Sets New Record

UPDATED 04/18/11 12:28 p.m.

CHICAGO (CBS)– Barely a week ago, the temperature topped 80 degrees in Chicago. But even though the calendar almost says May now, winter clobbered the area once again and set a new snowfall record.

CBS 2 Meteorologist Megan Glaros says at O’Hare International Airport Monday morning, the total amounted only to 0.6 inches, but even that was enough to set a record for this date. It swept out an earlier record of 0.4 inches, set in 1910.

Some areas of McHenry County saw nearly 2 1/2 inches of snow, while residents in some of the north and western suburbs reported 1-2 inches of snow. Some north suburban areas saw in excess of 3 inches of snow.

LISTEN: Newsradio 780’s Mary Frances Bragiel reports

As of 5 a.m. Monday, heavy, wet snow was falling throughout much of the area – all across Cook County from downtown north, as well as Lake and McHenry counties.

By 6:45 a.m., the snow had tapered off in the city of Chicago, but snowfall continued in north suburban areas. In downtown Chicago, there were plotches of snow all along the wet ground.

Waukegan, Lake Forest, McHenry and Crystal Lake were still seeing snowfall as late as 7:55 a.m.

To the south, a mix of snow and rain was seen, while far south of the area in Kankakee and in Gary, Ind., only cold rain was reported.

The wintry mix is expected to include freezing rain in many areas, and slick spots are sure to be a hazard for the morning rush.

The rain and snow tapered off by around 7 a.m., and the high Monday will reach 43 degrees. But the weather will hardly qualify as pleasant for the rest of the week.

On Monday night, the low drops to 36, with rain expected. On Tuesday, the high climbs only to 46 degrees, with a likely chance of showers and thunderstorms.

The average high for this time of year is 59. For the rest of the week after Tuesday, temperatures are expected to exceed 50 degrees, but still fall short of the average.

And while this date is late for snow, it’s hardly unheard of. The latest recorded snowfall in Chicago history was on June 2, 1910.

I’ll believe it when I see it. Chicago has the most inaccurate forcasters of any place I have ever lived!

    • BMCDawgg

Have you ever lived in Hampton Roads, VA? The forccasters here are terrible too!!!

    • Judge Knot

Mayor Daly would never allow snow to fall when he was mayor in April when the Cubs have a chance…

    • Lee

You are sooo right about that!

    • Michael Lyster

No, just the most inaccurate weather.
      Lived there 50 years.
Still have no idea what ‘normal’ weather is for March, or April.

  • mark

Not possible Tom Skilling….global warming, remember?

  • Gary Fales Cares

Bring it on, as if we didn’t have enough this year.

  • eman

Stupid Canada. Always sending their poopy weather here.

    • Melanie

We’ll remember not to send you any nice weather this summer. Enjoy your snow.

  • Vicky

Al Gore must be freezing his cajones off…….

    • Michael Lyster

NO, no: it’s because global warming makes it warmer, and so things get….colder…or, something.
Never mind: somehow, we blame George Bush! Yes, that’s how it works.

      • endof

see this is why we need carbon taxes, carbon is EVIL it causes global warming/climate change/global cooling/ THE WEATHER.

So clearly we need to tax the very substance that plants love to consume, its that simple. If we dont global warming will continue and it will er…get colder, i guess?

    • dill

      What cajones???????

  • South subs

Its 5:30 A.M what snow must be nice make all that money be worg 60% of the time and keep your job

Send the forecast to Barry (potus) and sit back and watch. I’ll bet it will be Bush’s fault. Ya think?

  • RufusVonDufus

Chicago is going to be punished quite a bit for electing that idiot mayor. Then, they will be getting the other idiot back in January of ’13. Oh, woe is you!

  • Hank Warren

Fake global warming, yet another violation of our rights. Add it to the list of gov’t violations of our right:
They violate the 1st Amendment by placing protesters in cages, banning books like “America Deceived II” and censoring the internet.
They violate the 2nd Amendment by confiscating guns.
They violate the 4th and 5th Amendment by molesting airline passengers.
They violate the entire Constitution by starting undeclared wars for foreign countries.
Impeach Obama and sweep out the Congress.

Wow… so much ignorance that doesn’t even relate to the article.

Speaking of snow jobs, brings to mind Obama.

Why does he have a SSN issued from Connecticut? He NEVER lived in CT.
    Details –

Oh yeah, thanks Chicago, for this Usurper.

When I lived in the Chicago area many years ago, I remember it snowing on Easter Sunday. That was one of the many reasons I got out of the Chicago area and Illinois as fast as I couild. It will be in the 80s and sunny here in the Houston area today just as it was yesterday. You couldn’t pay me enough to move back to Illinois , especially the Chicago area. The politics there ensure the state will be a financial disaster for years to come, yet the people keep on voting in the politicians who they know will do the same things.

You laugh… but I can terrorize children by teaching global climate catastrophe and get paid 180 g’s for part-time work as a school teacher here in Chicago.

What a buncha maroons here! They seem to crawl out of their bunkers (mommy’s basement) long enough to spout off some irrelevant nonsense that only mirrors their own pathetic conspiracy driven existence.

It’s freakin cold. It sux. End of story ya’ll.

Here we go again. The changing weather is making havoc on our health and well bieing. Climate change is on the way and it is turning the Alaska panhandel into a lake. Even the south pole it is melting at an alarming rate. However we can use the extra heat that is coming from the sun into an abundant energy to run our cars… if there any.. our busse if they build them and put them to work.. and trucks too could be running on this free energy.
We love the cold weather… and the snow… but at this time of the year we should be enjoying flowers blooming and running in the park with our pets trailing us along.

  • Matt

Am I the 1st to comment on how hot that weather chick is?

    • David Maxwell

Thankfully, someone has their eye on the ball.

  • kentex1146

How would I feel if I woke up tomorrow morning and learned that Chicago was under 100 feet of snow?

  • kentex1146

And it is time for everyone to get on board………’s not “global warming”

That terminology has been trashed. It’s now “climate disruption”

That means anything including aunt Sara’s hair do can be blamed on “climate disruption”

  • fanny Forbes Franklen

Man made global warming is a scam. Al Gore and the other degenerates that want you to believe it have financial interests in you falling for the BS.

One for time for the mental deficients in government:

Anthropogenic Global Warming (AGW) is a theory (hypothesis). It is an unproven theory. What you do with theories is put them to the test with scientific observations. Let’s see what data points we now have:

    1) Average annual temperatures have not surpassed 1998 (NOAA)
    (University of Alabama)

    2) Average annual temperatures are now trending downward since 1998
    (NOAA) (University of Alabama)

    3) Ocean temperatures have not risen since 2000 when the 3000 Argo buoys
were launched. The buoys even show a slight decrease in ocean temperatures

    4) The Arctic ice froze to February levels by December 07, there are 1mm
more sq km than before (previous was 13mm sq km)

    5) The Arctic ice is 20cm thicker than “normal” (whatever that is)

    6) All polar bear pods are stable or growing (NOAA/PBS)

    7) Mount Kilimanjaro is not melting because of global warming, rather

    8) The Antarctic is not “melting”, it is growing in most places, the
sloughing off at the edges is normal as the ice mass grows

    9) The majority of the Antarctic is 8 degrees below “normal” (again,
    whatever that is)

    10) The coveted .7 degree rise in temperatures over the last 100 years
has been wiped out with last years below “normal” temperatures (NOAA
    coolest winter since 2001)

    11) Al Gore’s film was just deemed “propaganda” in a court of law in the
UK as many points could not be substantiated by scientists

    12) It was also just reveled that some of the footage in Als film was
CGI. The ice shelf collapse was from the movie The Day After Tomorrow (ABC)

    13) One of the scientists that originally thought that CO2 preceded the
warming has now found with new data that the CO2 rise follows the
    warming (Dr David Evans)

    14) August 2008 was the first time since 1913 there were no sun spots.

    15) The Medieval Warm Period was warmer than the 20th century (no SUVs)

    16) Many scientists are now predicting 30 years of cooling.

    17) The greenhouse effect is real, our small contribution to it cannot
    even be measured

    18) Several publications, including those that are warmist have recently
written that the natural cycles of the earth may mask AGW. Give me a break.

    • glenp

GOOD INFO I shall reuse it to thwart the brain dead AGWists

  • glenp

it’s the ALGORE EFFECT he must have passed through OHARE. Remember when he set record COLD TEMPS IN CANCUN w a mere visit??

I have never seen so much hate-filled b***s*** in my entire life. Maybe you all need a hobby. Suggestion: BASE jumping. From the top of Willis Tower. Without a parachute….

    • glenp

HAHAHA that is hilarious!!! you seem to be focused on “hate filled b***s***”

From where does your very own example of HATE SPEECH originate?
