CHICAGO (CBS) With the 29th overall pick in the NFL Draft, the Chicago Bears selected offensive tackle Gabe Carimi from the University of Wisconsin.

Carimi was named the 2010 Outland Trophy winner as well as the 2010 Big Ten Offensive Lineman of the Year.

The 6’7″ 314-pound, Cottage Grove, WI native was considered by many to be among the top offensive tackles in the draft.

Carimi started 49 games over four years at Wisconsin, where he took over for former first-round draft pick Joe Thomas.

The Bears offensive line allowed a league-high 56 sacks last season.

Carimi and the rest of the Wisconsin line paved the way for a rushing attack that came up 4 yards short of producing three 1,000-yard rushers last season. The four-time Big Ten all-academic pick will graduate in May with a degree in civil engineering.

    YES! Protect Cutler!
Let’s hope the Bears finaly made the right choice in the first round.

    great pick

      agree 100%

  • Mark, Sterling

Wow, we might actually start to see what Cutler is capable of since he won’t be throwing from his BACK every game! I think this guy is a HUUUUUGE upgrade, even though he is a rookie. Maybe we can do away with the Chris Williams experiment now?

  • Jon, Montgomery

Looks to me like the Bears got a steal at the 29th pick, A great O-lineman to protect Cutler. I’m upset the Buccaneers didn’t pick him.

I think Jerry finally made a good choice with a 1st-rounder. Good luck to Carimi and the Bears this upcoming season.

I’ve been sure they would never do it right. Not while Angelo is still in place, at least. Lo and behold, they did, they did, they did!
    GO BEARS!

Not familiar with Gabe Carimi. Read his profile. Seems like a SOLID addition to the line. Everybody before me thinks we got a good player, so majority rules.
    GOOO BEARS!!!!!!

  • Rick Williams

Hopefully Carmi will be the bear who protects Cutler like his cub.

  • Mayor of Skokie

I hear he is going to be living in Carimi Green.
