Mentally Ill Man Slips Past Security At Willis Tower

CHICAGO (CBS) — Managers of the Western Hemisphere’s tallest building are trying to determine how a mentally ill man made it past security and nearly to the top of the building.

Newsradio 780’s Bernie Tafoya reports the man, Brian Woito, of 4600 block of North Sheridan, walked into the building and made it up to the 102 floor before anybody noticed him. Woito’s disheveled appearance went unnoticed by security personnel.

Somehow security did not notice Woito, who was later seen on security cameras following a Willis employee or tenant into a freight elevator on May 16. He is then seen alone in the elevator randomly pressing buttons. He was in the building for 16 minutes before he was arrested on the 32nd floor.

He was arrested and charged with trespassing.

C’mon man, the guy is mentally ill. He probably just wanted to see from the top of the building and the jerks at Willis Tower and the po po want to lock my man up? They should have given him a guided tour and then escorted him out of the building. I’ll bet that would have made him very happy. Wasn’t his fault the Willis Tower jerks let him pass?

  • Arjay

    What’s the “Willis” Tower?

  • GARY C.

  • Mr. Drummond

why can’t we do a remake of different strokes, only this time they live in the willis tower? ARNOLD, I told you NO MORE THROWING spare pennies at passing cars down below!

  • el_sal

@Arjay, they renamed the Sears Tower – honestly, I think they should have just left it as Sears Tower….Willis Tower is just too corny and too much a price to pay just to get some tennant to buy floorspace in the building.

Why don’t we go ahead and rename the Wrigley Bldg while we’re at it?

  • CeeLo

To me, it’ll always be the Sears Tower. Just goes 2 show u that money talks. I agree with NWA, it’s not that guy’s fault that he got as far as he did, shoddy security if u ask me.

  • me

uuuuuuuuuhhhhhhh……are people with mental disabilities now banned from entering buildings? i don’t understand the issue here. What’s next, “you’re too ugly to be allowed in this building?”

    • jesse

it’s called TRESSPASSING. Mental or not, it’s a crime to be there without permission from the building’s authorities. The same thing as a sane or mental person walking in your house and hanging out for 16minutes. The reference to his mental state is the media trying to show how he may have been a threat to people or property.

  • spanky

    @el_sal: Whoosh!

  • Lee Ving

He only made it up to the 102nd floor..I guess his elevator doesn’t go all the way to the top

  • Mental Health Advocate

trespassing can only occur in Illinois IF and WHEN the building or their assigned agents ask the person to leave and he/she either refuses to leave or returns in less than 24 hours.
