Teen Robbery Suspect Shot Dead By Police; One Arrested

Updated 5/26/2011 at 8:45 p.m.

CHICAGO (STMW) —  A shootout between Chicago Police and two robbery suspects left one of the suspects, a 15-year-old boy, dead Wednesday night in the South Shore neighborhood.

The boy was identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office as Tatiun Williams, of 1311 E. 69th St., who was pronounced dead at 8:40 p.m. by authorities at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

The incident unfolded about 8 p.m., when two Chicago Police sergeants were stopped by a person saying that two people just committed a robbery in the area of East 70th Street and South Cregier Avenue, police said.

The sergeants saw two people matching the description and ordered them to stop, police said.  One of the suspects armed with a weapon in his hand turned in the sergeant’s direction. The sergeant then shot the suspect, later identified by the medical examiner’s office as Williams.

The second suspect was arrested, police said. A weapon and proceeds from the robbery were recovered at the scene.

No one else was injured, police said.

A spokesperson from the Independent Police Review Authority, which investigates all police-involved shootings, could not immediately comment.

Calumet Area detectives are investigating.

Good Shot!!! I hope Northwestern doesn’t charge the taxpayers too much for pronouncing him dead.

  • Mr. Justice

Are you serious? If someone turns at you with a gun in their hand, you have two choices: 1) get shot or 2) shoot them. The police did the right thing.

The tribune said the kid was 15 years old and was shot in the upper back…now no need for RACIST comments guys… really…the kids just committed an ARMED ROBBERY…think of how the victim felt with a young kid with a gun in his face…the police were in the right place at the right time…you don’t have to point a gun at police for them to shoot…just having it in plan view is ENOUGH to get your head BLOWN CLEAN OFF as CLINT EASTWOOD would say…parents know what your child is doing and who he or she is doing it with or expect the phone call simply saying…There DEAD…and once again people ease up on the RACIST talk…some one’s 15 year old brains is on the curve….

  • Mike

I’m glad it wasn’t the cop that was shot.

  • Leroy Goldberg

Why not just enjoy the moment? The Police shot him and he’s dead, works for me!

  • swizzle

In order for it to be a ‘shootout’ both sides have to fire thier weapons, this didn’t happen. And how can one person turn to face another and get shot in the back by the guy he’s facing? This is not possible. Something about this seems fishy, given that the information being presented here is ‘suspect’ .
