McCarthy Vows To Establish Gun Offender Registry

CHICAGO (CBS) — Acting police Supt. Garry McCarthy is promising to establish a gun offender registry in Chicago, something aldermen have wanted for some time.

As WBBM Newsradio 780 Political Editor Craig Dellimore reports, during a confirmation hearing Monday before the City Council Public Safety Committee, Ald. Edward Burke (14th), a former police officer himself, complained to McCarthy that the City Council had voted to establish a gun offender registry similar to the sex offender registry more than a year ago. But former police Supt. Jody Weis never got the registry going.

McCarthy promised that he would get the registry underway.

“I’m a big believer in it,” McCarthy said. “If we have sex offenders registering, why wouldn’t we have gun offenders registering with the Police Department?”

People convicted of serious gun crimes who failed to register with the police would face penalties.

McCarthy is expected to be confirmed as superintendent by the full City Council on Wednesday.

Hold it!! Chicago makes it very difficult for law abiding citizens to own firearms. No firing ranges in city limits. Can’t carry weapon at the gun owners’ garage and porch. If this is focused on the criminals, all that is needed to do. Is to increase the sentences of of related crimes. No wonder Chicago can’t fight crime right.

The “gun ban” by the puking liberals has worked very well…………for the bad guys, but not so good for the law abiding citizens. A gun registry for criminals, how stupid is that? Sounds good, but won’t work. Criminals do not care about laws, that is why they are criminals. Having another law on the books will not stop thugs, punks, etc. from obtaining firearms. STUPID, STUPID, STUPID!

Before anyone can implement a gun offender registry one must look towards the effectiveness of the sex offender registry. Does it work at preventing crime? I doubt it. At best it might provide cops a place to look for suspects, but who knows how effective such information is in making arrests.
As far as those who are worried about any sort of attack on our gun rights, the registry is only for those convicted of a crime. If one is trulty law abiding there’s nothing to worry about.
the thing that concerns me is not the loss of gun rights, but the amount of resources spent on the implementation of such a registry vs it’s effectiveness. That’s the real concern here.
