Man Gets 20 Years For Home Burglary

MAYWOOD, Ill. (STMW) -- A west suburban man was sentenced to 20 years in prison for burglarizing a Riverside home and knocking a resident to the ground as he fled.

Martin J. Canonico, 58, of Westchester was arrested by Riverside police on Sept. 9, 2010, a release from police said.

Canonico attempted to commit a burglary at a home in the 200 block of Addison Road but was confronted by the 45-year-old daughter of the homeowner, the release said. She chased him out of the home and through several yards before being knocked to the ground by Canonico, who then ran away.

Police said the victim's daughter and many Riverside residents helped police by telling them what direction Canonico fled.

"The citizen cooperation was outstanding and I thank our residents for their continued support and cooperation in all matters that surround public safety," Riverside Police Chief Thomas Weitzel said in the release.

Canonico was sentenced under the Class X statute, which requires he serve the entire 20 years without parole.
