STEGER, Ill. (STMW) – A 10-year-old University Park boy drowned Friday at a south suburban Steger apartment complex.

A Steger police spokeswoman said the accidental drowning occurred at 316 W. Steger Rd. in the New Colonies apartment complex.

The spokeswoman declined to give further information and referred inquiries to the police chief, who was not immediately available.

The boy was identified as Anthony Perkins, of the 700 block of Spring Ct. in University Park, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

Perkins was pronounced dead at 3:31 p.m. Friday at St. James Hospital and Health Center  in Chicago Heights, according to the medial examiner’s office.

An autopsy is scheduled for Sunday, according to the medical examiner’s office.

“It was an unfortunate incident,” said New Colony property manager Donna Richter.
