Man In Critical Condition After Car Plunges Into Pond

DOWNERS GROVE, Ill. (CBS) -- A man was left in extremely critical condition after his car went off the road and plunged into a pond in Downers Grove overnight.

At 6:32 p.m. Thursday, the unidentified man was the sole occupant of a vehicle that was traveling northwest on Lacey Road near Butterfield Road, at a point where the road curves sharply, according to Downers Grove police Sgt. Dave Bormann.

"He didn't make the full curve," and the vehicle plunged into a pond, said the sergeant.

Several emergency crews went to his rescue and eventually pulled him out. He was last reported in extremely critical condition at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, according to the sergeant.

"It was several minutes before they were able to get him out," Bormann said.

Two police officers and four firefighters were all also taken to Good Samaritan to be checked out, after spending time in the water.

Bormann said he could not comment immediately about if the man was speeding or if drugs or alcohol could have been a factor. The accident remains under investigation, he said.
