Woman Using Cell Phone Crashes Into Man On Route 53

ROLLING MEADOWS, Ill. (CBS) — For anyone who may think he or she can text or use a cell phone and drive with no problem, think again.

As WBBM Newsradio 780’s Bernie Tafoya reports, there was one more example last night.

Illinois State Police say a 23-year-old Buffalo Grove woman caused an accident that put a man in a hospital because she was texting, or doing something else with her cell phone, while driving.

The accident happened just after 7:30 p.m. Monday on northbound Illinois Route 53 just south of Kirchoff Road in Rolling Meadows, state police said.

The 39-year-old accident victim was changing a tire on the left median, when Kelly Luch, 23, zoomed by, state police said.

As she scrolled through her cell phone, Luch lost control of her vehicle and hit a semi-trailer truck in the center lane, state police said. She then struck the rear of the vehicle on shoulder, pinning the man between who had been changing his tire the median and the vehicle.

The man was taken in serious condition to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, state police said.

Luch received three traffic citations –improper lane usage, driving on the shoulder, and texting while driving, state police said.

Dear Kelly – your butt deserves to spend time in jail – you are an idiot and for the safety of the rest of the world – I hope you don’t have any idiot children that have picked up your stupid ‘skills’ of texting and driving.

I think she should pay for the man’s medical bills, damage to his car, damage to the semi, damage to the road and have her drivers license revoked.

Have a nice day you Witch

    • Roberta Waker

Well said, except for the name calling. She WILL pay for his medical bills, etc. and a good lawyer will be able to get much more in punitive damages for the victim. Three citations might get her off the road for a little while. The same should apply to men who shave and read newspapers while driving; stupidity while driving isn’t limited to women. Driving requires your undivided attention for your safety as well as others.

      • francis

personally, I think Jack was being nice – he could have called her something way stronger than witch as would I

My two cents – she will not pay one red cent, she will get a lawyer to get her off – the man injured will have to pay his own bills, have to buy a new/used car and the taxpayers will get stuck with all the incidental costs this entire accident

    • Mike

Pretty harsh. I’m sure that she feels terrible and knows that she got lucky. I’m quite sure that you’re not perfect either.

  • Roberta Waker

Obviously cell phones need to be BANNED while driving in the entire State of Illinois because of stupid people like Ms. Luch. Drivers could lose everything they own if and when the insurance companies deny claims for damages and injuries because of an “illegal” activity. It may not be illegal everywhere in Illinois now, but this can change in a heartbeat. Wake up, drivers, it CAN and WILL happen to you if you don’t pay attention to your driving. Driving is serious business and needs your undivided attention.

I truly hope that it was not Kelly who almost ran me off of 1st Ave in Maywood yesterday at 6:00 pm – Smartphone and cig – veared into my lane, gave you a nice long honk and the ‘double bird’ .What did this particular woman do – sped up and passed me and two semi’s trying to get onto the Ike.

To this woman and all people who think that they are own the road – don’t hit me or I will sue you for every last cent you have and even the money you have yet to earn.

    Don’t be an idiot

    • Eric Fisher

how could you drive while flippin a double bird? 10 and 2 folks. I think the girls a dummy but everybody should quit acting so high and mighty like they never drove tired, after a few drinks, or other similarly stupid situations.

I hate news article comments sections.

      • Gina

@ Eric – she swerved around me at the stop light to the Ike – hence the ability to fly ‘double bird’ without danger

        sorry for the confusion

      • Roberta Waker

        Then why comment?

  • Lee

    1) Jail time…how about 5 years?
    2) Community service supporting victims of auto accidents caused by people like her — how about five years
    3) Lose her license — 10 years
    4) Heavy civil penalties
    5) Pay ALL medical expenses related to the victim’s injuries, both immediate and for however long they may reoccur.
    6) Paper her photo across newspapers around the country

    • jack

      7) Buy the guy a new car – 25K
      8) Pay for the damage to the semi – we’ll say 50K
      9) Pay the emergency services that had to respond – something like 50K
      10) Have her hold a sign saying that “I am the biggest idiot in the world” and stand of the shoulder of 53 – everyday sunup to sundown for 2 years

Yes, I’m harsh but she is a insensitive and careless human being who does not deserved sympathy

      • Roberta Waker

Have been in this situationn with a man talking on a cell phone that ran through a stop sign and almost killed me and my husband and totalled our vehicle. The insurance or lawsuit will not pay for his vehicle if it was totalled out – that will be part of the damages, but nowhere close to what a new or replacement vehicle will cost. She IS responsible for damaging the car, the median AND semi, plus the emergency services and current and future care for her victim. I would LOVE to see a sign on her vehicle saying she is a cell phone idiot and take away her cell phone totally for ONE FULL YEAR. I agree that she is insensitive and careless. Personally I would love to ram her cell phone down her ear; but then I would be arrested.

  • FR

How about heavy penalties for anyone dropping tire damaging debris on the road?

  • rafael

    • Roberta Waker

While this might sound like a good idea, it really isn’t. I keep a cell phone in the center console of my vehicle for EMERGENCIES and never use it while driving. If it was in the trunk, how would I be able to access it to call 911? Drivers need to control themselves and NOT use cell phones while driving. PERIOD.

      • Gina

        Six letters people – O N S T A R

is that confusing or crystal clear….can you hear me now….RW

and no I don’t work for them

  • Luke

    All such intelligent comments.

    • jack

you can’t tell anger and frustration can you Luke…

Let’s see your response if someone cuts you off or hits you while on their cell phone – we’ll be waiting

  • Roberta Waker

    Right on, Jack.

  • robert

ATTENTION KELLY LUCH – I am going to be on Rt 53 northbound in about 30 minutes – Don’t even think of getting near me – I’m driving the Honda Civic and I will chase you down

  • Kyle

There a nice little picture of her on Facebook. She looks like a fricken moron!!!

  • Guy
