Emanuel: Chicagoans Providing Useful Ideas On Budget

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Mayor Rahm Emanuel won't be specific, but says officials are getting some good ideas from the city Web site designed to let the public offer its own ideas for trimming Chicago's budget.

As WBBM Newsradio 780 Political Editor Craig Dellimore reports, Mayor Emanuel acknowledges the single most-often suggestion seen on the city's Web site is to cut the size of the City Council.

But the mayor says he cannot do any such thing anytime soon, even if he thought it was a good idea. Any change in the Council structure would have to be made by the Illinois General Assembly, or by Chicago voters through a binding referendum.

But regardless, Emanuel says there is no shortage of good ideas coming in, and his budget team is considering some.

"I walk away knowing that the people of the City of Chicago love their city, have passion for it, have ideas, and there are some very good ideas that are filtering to the top that I think can be promising as it relates to saving money," Emanuel said.

The mayor refused to single any suggestion out, saying his team must, in his words, "scrub them first."
