Humber Placed On DL; Sox Call Up Kinney

(CBS) A day after getting hit in the head by a line drive off the bat of Kosuke Fukudome, White Sox pitcher Philip Humber was placed on the disabled list with a facial contusion.

The team purchased the contract of right-handed Josh Kinney from Triple-A Charlotte to replace him. Kinney will likely head straight to the bullpen as that's where he has pitched all season long for the Knights. The 32-year-old reliever is 6-3 with a 2.77 ERA, 14 saves and 66 strikeouts in 49 relief appearances this season.

Humber was hit by a line drive right above his right eye Thursday night against the Indians. He popped right up and tried to stay in the game, but manager Ozzie Guillen took him out anyway.

With Humber out, Zach Stewart appears likely to pick up those starts.

Kinney will wear number 52 with the White Sox. He has an ERA of 4.56 in 49 career major league games, all of which were with the Cardinals. He has not pitched in the majors since 2009.
