CTA To Promote Safety For Incoming College Students

CHICAGO (CBS) -- The Chicago Transit Authority is launching a new campaign to promote safety and vigilance for Chicago area college students.

The CTA said Thursday that it is sending out printed and electronic brochures to more than 30 area colleges and universities, geared toward freshmen and incoming students who will become new CTA riders.

The brochures advise riders with a simple slogan, "See Something, Say Something."

"Freshman and new student orientation is an excellent opportunity to acclimate individuals to the CTA system as well as to guide them on how to travel safely around Chicago when using public transit," CTA President Forrest Claypool said in a news release. "In addition to our security cameras, police officers and other security procedures, an important part of being safe is being aware of your surroundings and knowing what to do in emergencies. These brochures will provide valuable tips for those new to the system and provide a refresher for those already familiar with the CTA."

The campaign brochures feature advice about personal safety, customer assistance, what to do in the event of an emergency, and what activities are prohibited on CTA buses and the 'L' train system.

Maps with rail and bus information are also included, the CTA said.

The schools will distribute the materials during orientation week, and they will be kept at university offices, the CTA said.
