Woman Shot, Critically Wounded In West Garfield Park

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A woman was shot in the head and critically wounded overnight in the West Garfield Park neighborhood.

Someone shot the woman around 9:15 p.m. Tuesday in the 4300 block of West Maypole Avenue, according to police News Affairs Officer Ronald Gaines.

Officers who were nearby responded to the scene almost immediately after someone reported hearing one shot fired, police said. The victim was found lying on a sidewalk, having been shot once in the head at close range, according to police.

There was no one else around her at the time, so police think she may have been the intended target. The victim, who lives nearby, was rushed to Stroger Hospital of Cook County where she remained early Wednesday with her family, police said.

Gaines said the woman was in critical condition when she was first transported to the hospital.

One person who heard the shot saw two people walking away from the scene, but it was not clear if the pedestrians were involved with the shooting or fleeing because they heard shots, according to police.

It was not immediately known what the motive is. Police said it appeared someone had just "walked up and shot her."

No one was in custody as of Wednesday morning. The motive for the shooting remained unknown.
