Bears Start To Make Final Roster Cuts

CHICAGO (CBS) -- The Chicago Bears released 14 players on Friday--the day after their final exhibition game--as the team began to trim its roster to the league-mandated 53 players.

Among the cuts: Guard Johan Asiata (UNLV), fullback Eddie Williams (Idaho), wide receivers Andy Fantuz (Western Ontario) and Onrea Jones (Hampton), and linebacker Chris Johnson (South Dakota State).

Nine undrafted rookies were also cut: Linebackers Tressor Baptiste (Texas A&M-Kingsville) and Deron Minor (McNeese State), cornerbacks Antareis Bryan (Baylor) and Ryan Jones (NW Missouri State), tackle Josh Davis (Georgia), punter Spencer Lanning (South Carolina), defensive end Jake Laptad (Kansas), center Alex Linnenkohl (Oregon State), and receiver Jimmy Young (TCU).

The only player waived Friday who has played in a regular-season game for the Bears is Asiata, who appeared in two games last year, according to the Chicago Bears official website.

The Bears still must cut 13 more players by 5 p.m. Saturday to reach the NFL's 53-man roster limit.
