HOMEWOOD, Ill. (CBS) – A woman from south suburban Homewood who reportedly injected her face with beef fat died from intestinal complications, medical examiners announced Friday.

As WBBM Newsradio’s Bernie Tafoya reports, the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office says Janet Hardt, 63, of the 1000 block of West 186th Street in Homewood, was pronounced dead at 6:25 p.m. Thursday at Advocate South Suburban Hospital in Hazel Crest.

A source said shortly before Hardt died she injected hot beef fat into her face around her mouth and chin, and it hadn’t been the first time. She had reportedly made the injections on several occasions before. But this time, Hardt went to the hospital after complaining that her face became singed and felt like it was burning, according to the source.

She has previously undergone multiple facial surgeries, the source said.

An autopsy Friday determined Hardt died of peritonitis, a severe abdominal inflammation caused by a bacterial infection from weakened walls in her colon, according to the medical examiner’s office.

Infections she suffered in her face from the injections did not lead to her death, which was ruled natural, according to the medical examiner’s office.
