CHICAGO (CBS) — Stickers are out–and new licenses are in–for safe drivers in Illinois.

Current practice had safe drivers in Illinois getting renewal stickers in the mail as their old license was about to expire.

The sticker made for an easy way for drivers to renew for another four years without having to make another trip to a branch office to get a new license

Secretary of State Jesse White says technological improvements now mean, instead of sending out stickers, he’ll be able to send out a whole new license through the mail.

White says about 300,000 motorists each year have been using the sticker through the mail program for safe driver license renewals.

Why don’t “technological improvements” result in lower costs instead of steady increases?

And how can sending out a new license and not a sticker be cost effective? It isn’t!

  • Roberta Waker

The sticker for license plates must cost under $5 to make, yet we pay $99 for this sticker. Why can’t the license plate fees be reduced if “technological improvements” are enabling safe drivers to get a regular license instead of a sticker?
