1 Dead After Car Slams Into Pole On Chicago Avenue

UPDATED 10/11/11 1:14 p.m.

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A driver was killed when a car slammed into a light pole Tuesday morning on Chicago Avenue in the South Austin neighborhood.

Just before 5:30 a.m., the driver was headed west on Chicago Avenue when something went wrong and the vehicle crossed the center divide.

The car crashed headlong into a light pole at the corner of Chicago and Lockwood avenues, reports CBS 2's Kris Habermehl.

The driver, whose identity was unknown as of about 12:30 p.m., was believed to be in his early 50s, a spokesman for the Cook County Medical Examiner's office said. He was pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital of Cook County.

Shots were reported to have been fired in the same vicinity around the time of the crash, but do not appear to be connected with the crash, Baety said.

The Police Major Accident Investigation Unit is investigating. Police remained on the scene as of 6:35 a.m.
