CHICAGO (CBS) – The children of one of two firefighters killed last year when the roof of an abandoned building collapsed last year have filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the building’s owners.

WBBM Newsradio’s Dave Berner reports that Jennifer Stringer and Edward Stringer Jr. also called on city officials and state lawmakers to enact tougher penalties for owners of dangerous buildings.

Their father, Edward Stringer, 47, was a 12-year veteran of the Chicago Fire Department. He and fellow firefighter Corey Ankum, 34, were killed last December when the roof of an abandoned Laundromat collapsed during an extra-alarm blaze. Nineteen other firefighters were injured in the collapse.

The building had been cited 14 times for building code violations. Stringer’s children have filed a lawsuit against the building owners – Chuck M. Dai and Richard Dai – for negligence and wrongful death.

The suit claims the owners failed to properly maintain the building, leading to the fatal roof collapse.

“Neither my father or his comrade would have died that day if this building had been properly secured or, better yet, torn down,” Jennifer Stringer, 23, said at a news conference on Wednesday.

Her attorney, Peter Flowers, said the Stringer family also wants tougher penalties for owners of dangerous abandoned buildings.

“What they are calling (for) today is that stronger penalties be put in place to deal with these land owners who are cited over and over and over again,” Flowers said.

Jennifer Stringer said she doesn’t want other firefighting families to go through what her family went through.

It seems to me that the roof collapse was caused by a raging fire, not a maintenance issue. Firefighters know what they are getting into from the start. Maybe the most fair thing for the family to do, is track down the homeless people who started the fire and sue the pants off of them.

Jack Jack it comes down to who threw for the first STONE , not the homeless not the fireman and not the city. Jack get a gripe. the landlord is the keeper of the stone so to speak . UM GOOD NIGHT JACK

  • Barry Brown

WELL THIS KIND OF NEGLECT BY PROPERTY OWNERS HAS BEEN THE SIGHT OF OTHER MISHAPS, tHE PROPERTY OWNERS SHOULD BE HELD LIABLE 100% BECAUSE OF THIER DISREGARD FOR THE SAFETY OF OTHER PEOPLE IN ALL WALKS OF LIFE, ie FIREMAN POLICEMAN BAKERS CANDILE STICK MAKERS AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC AT LARGE.
Sooo its time to take action and fix the hangup. Its time for action jackson.

Why don’t we have a firefighter company policy that DOESN’T send firefighters into empty ghetto buildings? If there are squatters in there, that is their own problem, not the firefighters.

    • Shawntayontay

@Dylan, You have made a very good suggestion. It’s IMPOSSIBLE to completely secure any building. Money doesn’t grow on trees. This building was a piece of garbage, not generating any revenue. A property owner can’t be responsible for other people’s actions. It was a mistake to worry about the building or the trolls inside that started the fire. Stop sending firefighters into foolish situations!!

  • Barry Brown

Dylan it goes back to the same issue, if the landlord did his job as a property owner none of this would have happened in the first place.. They didnt secure the property good enough in the first place if at all… Dylan have you met Jack?

    • Shawntayontay

Hey Barry, Maybe the property owner just doesn’t have money falling out of his ass. Maybe the tens of thousands for repair or demolition just isn’t there. What then? No, firemen need to just avoid taking risks in certain situations!!!

  • Tina

No fireman should go to any building or house that has been abandoned, ie boarded up. do you know how many there are now a days? People walking away from their properties because they can’t pay the mortgage or property taxes. They should sue the city for not knowing better or not training the fireman properly. Why would you want to put out a fire in an abandoned building/home? Wouldn’t that be covered by insurance it the building is totaled? Did the owner of the building set the fire or sent the firemen up on the roof? This is just money hungry lawyers who probably found out the owner had something they can take.

Shame on the families for trying to cash in on a tragedy! Tragedy…then they come out of the woodwork!
