CHICAGO (CBS) — A man was arrested overnight after he accidentally shot a 16-year-old boy while playing around with a handgun in the South Shore neighborhood.

The man and the teenage boy were “goofing around” with the gun in the 1800 block of East 71st Street about 9:45 p.m. when it went off and hit the boy in his right arm and side, police News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro said. Police do not know who was holding the gun when it fired.

The boy was struck by bullets in the arm and side.

He was initially taken to Jackson Park Hospital and Medical Center before being transferred to Stroger Hospital of Cook County in stable condition, police said.

The man was in custody, but charges have not been filed as of Friday morning.
