Cubs Unveil New Manager Sveum

(WSCR) The Cubs welcomed new manager Dale Sveum as the franchise's 58th manager at an introductory press conference Friday at Wrigley Field.

Sveum joins the North Side from the Brewers, where he served on the coaching staff for six seasons.

The Cubs brought in Rangers pitching coach Mike Maddux, Phillies bench coach Pete Mackanin and Indians coach Sandy Alomar Jr before ultimately hiring Sveum.

"It was exhaustive," Cubs general manager Jed Hoyer said of the interview process. "We thank everyone who participated very much. Everyone of the candidates that we brought in will certainly manage in the major leagues. ... In the end, it was very clear to us. There was one candidate that stood out from the other. Dale was outstanding in every way. We're thrilled to announce Dale as the next manager of the Chicago Cubs."

The 47-year-old California native has previous ties to the Cubs new president of baseball operations Theo Epstein and Hoyer, as Sveum was the third base coach for Boston's 2004 World Series team.

He acted as an interim manager for Milwaukee in 2008.

"I have 16 games under my belt as a manager, besides managing in Double A for a few years," Sveum said. "The one thing being in the game for 30 years, you experience a great deal. You might not have experience (actually managing), but you experience one heck of a lot when you've been in the game for 30 years."

Sveum signed a three-year deal with an option for a fourth year.
