Peterson: Missing Woman Found In California Proves Stacy Could Be Alive

JOLIET, Ill. (CBS) — Drew Peterson says Illinois State Police need to apologize to him for suggesting he might have killed his fourth wife, Stacy.

In a news release, Peterson says he is owed an apology because a woman who disappeared 18 years ago was just found alive in California, and he thinks the same could someday happen with Stacy, who vanished four years ago from the family home in Bolingbrook.

KCBS and KCAL-TV Los Angeles reported last week on the case of Judith “Yudith” Bello, who vanished from her home in Stanwood, Wash., in 1993, leaving behind two children. She had been scheduled to pick up her 3-year-old son from daycare, but never showed up, and her car was found abandoned.

But while Bello was feared dead, it turned out that she was actually living in Fontana, Calif., under a new name with a new life and a new family.

Relatives said at the time that Bello, 28 at the time of her disappearance, had run off because her former husband was abusive.

In the news release, Peterson said Bello’s case proves that his statements about what happened to Stacy are perfectly plausible.

Peterson has always claimed that Stacy, 23 when she disappeared, ran off with another man. But Stacy’s own family says there is no way she would have abandoned her two young children.

But Drew Peterson says if Bello abandoned her children and vanished for years, there is no reason to believe that his fourth wife didn’t do the same.

“Suspicion was cast on her husband because they were having marital difficulties,” a news release on Peterson’s behalf said. “Police at the time said that it was unlikely Bello would voluntarily leave because she was a good mother and was close to her family. It turns out that’s exactly what she did.”

Thus, Peterson, a former Bolingbrook police sergeant, said he is owed an apology by state police for saying Stacy is “missing and presumed dead” and for naming him a person of interest in her disappearance.

“There is a huge cloud of suspicion cast over Drew Peterson because of the Illinois State Police’s statement that Stacy Peterson is presumed dead; however there is absolutely no evidence to support that statement,” Peterson attorney Joel Brodsky said in the release. “They made it seem like no woman, no mother, would ever just disappear, but as this most recent case shows, it does happen. In fact it happens more often than you would think”

Brodsky said when Stacy was a youngster, her own mother disappeared.

“In Stacy’s mind disappearing may be ‘normal,’” Brodsky said in the release.

Drew Peterson remains in custody at the Will County Jail, awaiting trial on murder charges in the death of his third wife, Kathleen Savio, whose body was found in a dry bathtub in 2004.

The Will County Coroner’s office originally ruled Savio’s death an accidental drowning. But after Stacy disappeared in October 2007, Savio’s body was exhumed and her death was reclassified as a homicide.

Peterson made the rounds on national talk shows after he became the subject of suspicions, steadfastly proclaiming his innocence and repeating that Stacy had run off with someone else. While Peterson was ultimately arrested and charged in Savio’s murder in 2009, he has never been charged in Stacy’s disappearance.

But Stacy’s family has long believed the Peterson killed her.

“I hope you regret what you’ve done, taking someone so sweet and so fragile away from your family and you — and me and my family,” Stacy’s sister, Cassandra Cales, told CBS 2’s Mike Puccinelli in October. “She meant no harm to you and she wasn’t going to take all your money and everything. You just couldn’t live with her being with another man. She loved you very much and she just couldn’t put up with your jealousy and that’s what we talked about the night before you murdered her.”

Drew Peterson is expected to go on trial in Savio’s murder next year.

Whatever Drew. Have a nice life. Sentence, that is!

  • Kelley

No reason, except that pesky murdered third wife situation. Yeah, guess it’s the same thing.

  • Kenny

Damn right they owe him an apology. They’re going to owe him a much larger apology when he is exonorated from all wrong doing in Savio’s accidental death as well, not to mention the massive lawsuit he will win afterwards. The prosecuters messed up in a major way, when they arrested him before assembling evidence that proves his guilt. Forget about the second autopsy, bought and paid for. Also forget about hearsay opinions from people who hate his guts, their opinions are irrelevant.

ok, and u r WHO???? HIS MAMMA??????

  • Chivi

He’s guilty!! No aplogy owed!! Get used to it DP!! You are going down one way or another!! If it’s not for Stacey, Savio is going to come back to haunt you. If not Savio, any of the others you’ve killed!! You have a whole lot of demons following you around!!

  • Jim Hamilton

    • Kenny

Jim, you obviously haven’t been playing as close attention to this story as I have. The prosecution has absolutely nothing on Drew, concerning Savio’s death, nothing. They prematurely arrested him and are probably hoping they find some kind of solid proof before trial. Just because you and alot of others don’t like the guy, remember that the media is responsible for trying him in the media. They have zero physical evidence to prove guilt. Hearsay isn’t worth a penny!!

      • Kenny

All of you people are basing your opinions on the fact that you hate the guy. Beth, what facts are you aware of that convinces you he is guilty? It is disturbing that people like you may be on a jury deciding someone’s fate someday. Do the facts in this case, or lack there of, mean nothing? What is the proof? Murder weapon? Cause of death? Witnesses? Any evidence? Sorry, he will walk due to a severe lack of any proof beyond a doubt!!!

      • Beth

I do believe Kenny and Drew may be related!! Wake up honey, the facts are staring you right in the face. All you need to do is open your eyes like the rest of us! If it smells like poop, it is poop!!

It’s a different time and a different person. You cannot compare these two women. Besides, how many more of these missing women have turned up dead rather than alive? Do you hear Peterson talking about them? I think not.

With the technology nowadays, she would have made contact with someone by now. Would she really put her family through that much pain? I doubt it.

Peterson and his lawyer are just being opportunists with this story. He did it. Both times. We all know it. Let’s hope he’s convicted, so all of this nonsense ends.

  • Linda

    Doesn’t prove a thing, buddy.

  • dan

I always wondered if the disappearance of Stacy and Lisa Stebic were related. 2 women living not too far from each other vanish without a trace? Who knows perhaps the same person is responsible for both?

Not saying Drew Peterson is a saint-he didn’t help his image by blabbing on and on and for just that her deserves the punishment he is getting but who knows…..maybe he didn’t do it

    • jstcnw

Maybe Drew was paid to kill Lisa Stebic.

  • Just the Average Joe

It’s a shame, because I think he is guilty too. Just too much smoke for no fire, however, they must have evidence to convict him and I don’t think they have any convincing tangible evidence. Furthermore, he has been put under an unreasonable amount of bail that is not justified for a person with no criminal history, no confession, no evidence, and no real expectation of flight from justice. I don’t believe anybody in the state has ever had bail set that high. You may not like him, and I understand that, he’s not very likable, but that is not justice to treat him differently than others with similar accusations.

  • Centurion

Drew….what this proves…is that this woman is alive…not Stacy. Sorry, but your delusional thoughts are …..beyond a sad state of mind.

So, if you want to know more about what may have happened to Stacy Peterson. Remove Drew Peterson from protective custody and let him walk the yard. Put this windbag in Gen Pop. A few days in Gen Pop, and Drew will start telling the truth.

  • Dian

i think Kenny is really Drew in drag, Trying to find out how the “jury pool” will feel about him when they are called. My husbands first wife disappeared for 7yr, walked out on her kids and him. when we just about to have her declared “dead” back she came. So there is no telling what she did (ex wife, not Stacey) although I don’t feel that Stacey would volunterily leave her kids, not with this nut. I feel for the kids, all of them from his former marriages, the torture they must be going through

  • Tammy Burns

I think from now on, we all should base a person’s guilt on whether or not we like the accused. This would save police and prosecuters alot of time, effort, and money. Who needs proof? We all know when someone is guilty, based on the media reports. Maybe we can just skip the trial and take a survey of citizens as to whether or not someone should go to prison. Maybe we can call this new system, Communism. Oops, we can’t use that one, it’s already taken.

What ever happened to innocent until proven guilty ??Hearsay should not be allowed. The State police has a hard on for this man!!

  • Kelley

Whatever became of the 5th future Mrs. Drew?

  • Lyndia

He quite possibly killed both of his wives. I believe he did. No one is going to drown in an empty shower or tub. Right? Stacey’s family said she would never run off and leave her young children. Right? Two wives are not with him. Not one wife, but TWO. He killed them both, I believe. However, THEY HAVE TO PROVE IT. As of yet, they do not have any evidence. The 5th future Mrs. Drew will appear as soon as he gets out. She will probably be 40 years younger than him and he is going to kill her too.

  • Charlotte

Even if you believe that the last wife is a run away…and I don’t. He staged the accident for the previous wife and is being tried for her murder. What a self absorbed looser.

  • Mr.truth54

This guy is a piece of that stuff that comes out of a rectum with a bad case of irritable bowel syndrom. However, two years in jail before you go to trial??? Come-on man, what ever happen to the speedy trial act? Oh by the way, I don’t believe she just ran away, I believe his ego could never handle her being with someone else. But, give the man a fail trial and then execute him!!
