CHICAGO (CBS) — A man was shot and killed Thursday night after a gunman came up behind him in the North Lawndale neighborhood.

Maurice Vortes, 28, was dead on the scene after being shot in the 1500 block of South Kedzie Avenue, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

Vortes was shot in the head about 9 p.m., police News Affairs Officer Daniel O’Brien.

A male suspect approached the man from behind and shot him before fleeing the scene, police said.

Calumet Area detectives are conducting a homicide investigation. No one was in custody early Friday in connection with the shooting.
