Aikman: Not Sure Tice Will Be Successful As OC

(WSCR) As a person, Troy Aikman will tell you how great Mike Tice is, but as an offensive coordinator, that’s a different story.

While Tice has never before assumed the role of offensive coordinator, Aikman has a feel it isn’t going to go well for the Bears.

“I really like Mike Tice a lot. I really have a lot of respect for Mike as an offensive line coach and in his years there in Minnesota,” Aikman told The Mully and Hanley Show. “I’ve just not seen offensive lineman come in and be offensive coordinators and be successful. We’ll see how it works out, but this is a passing league. Mike Tice wants to run the ball. … Can you win? Yeah, you can win. But if I was a quarterback, I’d want to be playing for someone who understands the passing game about as well as anyone else around the league.”

Didn’t Tice play QB in college and TE in the pros? He coaches OL but he’s not one. And aren’t the Bears planning on hiring a passing game coordinator? Tice seems like an intelligent guy so I’m sure he sees how important the passing game has become in the league. He won’t be airing it out like New Orleans or Green Bay, but I think he knows it needs to be fairly balanced. Designed roll outs and play action should help a lot. And maybe let Cutler make some audibles. He’s a smart QB, let him make some critical decisions.
