GARY, Ind. (STMW) – A 2-year-old girl was in critical condition in a Chicago hospital after she apparently was accidentally shot in the head by another child while playing.
The shooting occurred about 2:30 p.m. Saturday in the 2800 block of 9th Avenue, according to Cpl. Gabrielle King, public information officer with the Gary Police Department.
King said it appears 2-year-old Joriah Henderson was in a bedroom with two other children. One of the children was asleep, and another child, who was younger than 10, and Joriah were awake playing.
“For some strange reason there was a gun in the room where the children were playing,” King said, adding the handgun was underneath a television set.
The little girl’s father was in the residence but was in a different room at the time of the shooting.
The age and relationships of the children involved are unclear at this time, she said. Joriah was taken to Methodist Hospital Northlake by her family after the shooting. Gary police were made aware of the incident by the hospital. She was airlifted to a Chicago-area hospital for treatment.
King said police still are investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting,
“It appears right now to be an accidental shooting. There may be charges forthcoming. You can’t just leave guns lying around,” King said.
At this point it is unclear to whom the handgun may be registered.
Police also want to ensure the account of the shooting by the family is accurate.

It is sad that we live in a society where we demonize a tool ( firearms) to the point that children are not universally taught guns safety. That is the reason for most gun “accidents” IMHO– not that they were not in a safe where they are useless when needed.

I live in New Orleans. We have this happening almost weekly. Some criminal holds his gun sideways while trying to aim at another criminal/competitor and an innocent bystander is hit or killed. A liberal judge gives him 6 months in jail “because he had a hard life” and back he goes to killing. I say if we have a swinging door on the jails make them take a mandatory shooting course to teach them how to shoot straight and hit the other bad guys instead of innocent people. Don’t let em out till they can hit what they are aiming at. Sounds stupid? Think about this the next time a baby is killed by accident. If we won’t keep em locked up at least they won’t be hitting babies anymore.

I always admired the New Orlean’s negros. Shooting at the rescue helicopters and crying about not being rescued. Floating their looted goods in barrels through the flood waters………………….I really like the fact they were stealing electronics even though the power was out. Ahhhhhhhh, good times !!!

I make the assumption that many blacks own guns illegally because even where you can legally carry the cost is set high to discourage minority gun ownership. I know it is here in Missouri, By making them a fringe criminal they do not get the gun education that they should be receiving. The legal system has much blame to shoulder.
