One Dead, One Critically Injured In LSD Crash

CHICAGO (STMW) -- A woman was killed and a passenger critically injured Sunday morning when she lost control of the car she was driving on Lake Shore Drive on the South Side, police said.

The woman -- identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner's office as 24-year-old Keisha Mitchell -- was driving a 2010 Hyundai Elantra in the 2900 block of South Lake Shore Drive when, according to witnesses, the car went across four lanes of traffic from left to right, police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli said.

The car then spun out of control, went off the roadway and struck a tree, Mirabelli said.

The Chicago Fire Department had to extricate the woman and her front-seat passenger, a 25-year-old man, from the car, Mirabelli said.

Mitchell, of 4637 S. Lake Park Ave., was pronounced dead at 5:18 a.m. at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, according to the medical examiner's office, which will perform an autopsy Monday.

The man was also taken in critical condition to Northwestern Hospital, according to Fire Media Affairs. He underwent emergency surgery for internal injuries, Mirabelli said.

The police Major Accident Investigation Unit is investigating.
