3 Restaurant Workers Shot Trying To Thwart Car Break-In

UPDATED 02/10/12 5:21 a.m.

CHICAGO (CBS) — Police are looking for as many as six people after a shooting outside a Michelin-rated restaurant on the city’s Near West Side.

As CBS 2’s Susanna Song reports, three employees were shot around 8:15 p.m. Thursday in the alley behind the Frontier restaurant, at 1072 N. Milwaukee Ave. in the Noble Square neighborhood. Police said the gunfire erupted as several men tried to break into a co-worker’s car.

The people who were shot included the restaurant general manager, a cook, and a bartender.

“An employee outside taking a smoke break, and there were five guys breaking into one of the other employees’ cars, and so he called to him back in the restaurant and said, ‘Hey, somebody’s breaking into your car,’” said Mark Domitrovich, owner of the Frontier restaurant.

Domitrovich says when word reached the restaurant that there was a car break-in, a bunch of his employees went back to check out what was going on.

They saw the suspects sitting in the car in the alley, and moments later, the robbers opened fire and took off.

“We were all home. We heard some noise, some voices, some yelling and then there was a little bit of silence, and we heard two gunshots, a pause, and three more — then we paused,” said neighborhood resident Lauren Wicke.

When police and paramedics arrived, three Frontier workers were injured. They were all taken to area hospitals in serious to critical condition.

One was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, while two were taken to Stroger Hospital of Cook County. As of early Friday morning, their conditions had been reported as stable.

Police say the men never got away with the car they were trying to steal, but they were still at large as of early Friday.

The multi-level Frontier restaurant is known for its American contemporary cuisine by executive chef Brian Jupiter. The restaurant features up to 20 varieties of oysters, and says it can smoke a whole pig, lamb, goat or wild boar.

The restaurant was recommended in the 2012 Michelin Guide, and made the Chicago Reader’s “Favorite Restaurants of 2011” list.

Maybe they should change the name of the restaurant to ‘The Wild Frontier’.

    • LM

Vicky – that is an a**hole comment, you should be ashamed of yourself. Innocent people were shot near where they worked.

More victims of the criminals in Springfield who disarmed them.

You have to understand that more crime furthers their power over you.

    • InalienableWrights

And that they will do anything to insure that crime continues unabated.

What the hell does that have to do with anything Tea-Baggin’ Racist!!!!

      • Anglo-Saxon

@Me, That is the most relevant fact in this story! It’s not racist, people need to know who is commiting these violent crimes so we all have an idea who may be a potential criminal!!!

  • WetNurse

I wonder if a statewide handgun registration would have prevented such a crime?

Sorry, but I lost all of my guns in a boating accident while deep sea fishing. No guns for you Rahm! Try Davy Jones locker, I’ll offer you some lead weights and some concrete shoes so you get to the bottom.

  • juju

Hope it wasn’t a tea bagger. Not in the mood today for that.

  • Just Axin

Hoth- The cutting/pasting should be attributed to your post as you contribute absolutely nothing to this board. You must be very lonely.

didnt look like an averted car theft from where i was watching it go down. But then again most car thieves i know, especially the ones that carry guns, like to stick around for a scuffle, fist fight, and shoot out so they can be identified by witnessess before they make off with their goods eh? illinois guns laws…yeah there is another joke…boy are we safe, its probably a good thing the shooter wasnt a chicgao registered handgun owner, then he would have had range time and we’d be talking a triple homicide, not three wounded. And hats off to the rest of the male staff at Frontier that let a female bartender go run out with two guys into the alley to avert a car heist…brilliant, are you meeting her parents this weekend?

    • .....,,,

i was the female involved in this get your facts straight before you criticize the male staff at Frontier. this is not how it went down… and i’m one of the cooks, not a bartender.

    • .....,,,

and you were watching it go down? why didnt you call 911 then? the criminals were stealing my coworkers car. thats how it started.

  • Reality

They need to get rid of the run down section 8 housing across the street from Frontier. Its a haven for crome

    • InalienableWrights

I thought it was funny. What is wrong with society is they criminals in Springfield disarmed these 3 people and caused their injuries.
