When police arrived, the man — identified as John Corcoran, 34, of Waukegan — pulled out the handgun. One of the officers opened fire when the suspect refused to drop it.
Corcoran was pronounced dead on the scene at 11:20 p.m., according to Lake County Coroner Artis Yancey.
Preliminary investigation by the coroner’s office confirms he suffered a gunshot, but the cause and manner of death will not be official until an autopsy is performed Friday morning, Yancey said.
The Lake County Major Crimes Task Force is investigating.
