Cubs Sign Cuban Concepcion To 5-Year Contract
MESA, Ariz. (CBS) -- The Cubs have signed left-handed Cuban pitcher Gerardo Concepcion to a five-year deal.
Concepcion, 20, was the Rookie of the Year for the Cuban National League last year, posting a 3.36 ERA, and a 10-3 record in 21 games.
Terms of the contract were not disclosed.
Concepcion defected from Cuba when the Cuban National went to the World Port Tournament in Holland. He later established his residency in Mexico and was declared a free agent by Major League Baseball. He has been training in the Dominican Republic.
The left-hander is being sent to minor league camp, but is on the team's 40-man roster.
