WHEATON, Ill. (CBS) A former teacher at Metea Valley High School in Aurora has pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a student.

As WBBM Newsradio’s Mike Krauser reports, teacher Robert C. Smith, 28, admitted guilt in a plea deal that will send him off to prison for six years and make him a registered sex offender for life.

DuPage County Assistant State’s Attorney Michael Pawl told Judge John Kinsella that the former physics teacher and track coach had sexual contact with a 16-year-old student on at least two occasions at a Naperville hotel.

The investigation started after a girl told someone else at school what had occurred, and Smith wrote an apology letter to the girl and her family.

Police began their investigation in September 2010. Smith was removed from classes and school activities once Indian Prairie School District officials learned of the investigation.

Smith faced a minimum of 16 years in prison had he been convicted on all four charges. He will have to serve 85 percent of his sentence.

@Maria, A 16 year old is not a child, at least not a prepubecent adolescent. When I was 16, I had a huge sex drive. Most 16 year olds are already sexually active. The young woman in question hooked up with this guy completely voluntarily. You are wrong in your assumption that a teenager isn’t interested in sex. This is not 1950, it’s 2012. That is really a matter of opinion. It is illegal here, but many European countries consider 16 to be the age of consent. So it isn’t wrong or rape. It is simply illegal.

The young adult stage in human development precedes middle adulthood. A person in the middle adulthood stage is between the ages of 40 – 65. @Memph, Kids under five are toddlers. Kindergarten through 8th grade are adolescents. High school students are young adults. Once out of high school, you can volunteer for combat in the military, you are considered an adult.

Maria the problem with ALL of us is that we never think before we act. We never think that just because we could ,doesn’t mean we should. Fact is it very well may have been consensual ,but it is still wrong on many levels. Sorry she IS a child.
