Diabetes Alert: Take A Risk Test, Save Your Life

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Would you take a minute to take a test, if it could save your life?

That's about all the time you need to determine if you are at-risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

CBS 2 is partnering with our local American Diabetes Association to Stop Diabetes. You can take a simple risk test and share it with as many friends and family as possible.

The Diabetes Risk Test is available in English and Spanish by visiting Facebook, StopDiabetes.com or by calling 1-800-DIABETES (1-800-342-2383)

Diabetes is a serious disease that strikes nearly 26 million children and adults in the United States including nearly one million in Illinois.

About seven million people do not even know they have it. An additional 79 million, or one in three American adults, have pre-diabetes, which puts them at high risk for developing type 2 diabetes.

Recent estimates project that as many as 1 in 3 American adults will have diabetes in 2050 unless steps are taken to stop it.

Among the primary risk factors for type 2 diabetes are being overweight, sedentary, over the age of 45 and having a family history of diabetes. African-Americans, Hispanics/Latinos, Native Americans, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders are at an increased risk.

The Association funds research to prevent, cure and manage diabetes; delivers services to hundreds if communities; provides objective and credible information;and gives voice to those denied their rights because of diabetes. Founded in 1940, our mission is to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes.
