Joliet Man Hit By Squad Car Dies From Injuries

NEW LENOX, Ill. (STMW) — A 30-year-old man died Saturday from injuries he suffered being hit by a Will County Sheriff’s squad car Wednesday night in southwest suburban New Lenox.

Andrew L. May of Joliet had been on life support at Silver Cross Hospital since shortly after the accident occurred about 11:15 p.m. Wednesday.

Police said the accident occurred as a deputy was on patrol heading south on Briggs Street near Elgin Avenue in Joliet Township. There are sidewalks on both sides of the street, but police said May was in the roadway “about 4 or 5 feet from the shoulder” when he was struck by the deputy.

The deputy was not injured or identified but has been placed on administrative leave, police said.

May remained hospitalized until he was pronounced dead at 3:15 p.m. Saturday.

The crash still is under investigation.

I am so sorry for this family…what a senseless death!

What I do not understand is why all these law enforcement officers
are constantly getting second chances for such grave mistakes instead
    of punishments?

If this was a regular guy that had hit a pedestrian, even if he was not
drunk or high while driving, we would have wanted their head on a platter.

So why the special treatment for police officers? They should be held
to a high standard, and the punishment should be the same, not less!

Maria-Read the story again. The poor guy that got killed was 5 feet into the road and it was after 11 p.m. at night. Additional things to consider;, was the victim wearing dark clothes? Were there street lights in the area? Was he drunk? It’ sort of like when a pedestrian gets hit and killed by a car at 3 a.m. on The Bishop Ford Freeway. I don;t know about you. But when most of us drive down the freeway at 3 a.m. at 55 mph we don’t expect to see some guy walking down the middle of the fast lane in the middle of no where.

So please do not lecture this old lady, I have seen enough stupidity
in this country almost 7 decades worth to fill 5 lifetimes and generations
      ( that’s 500yrs worth )..

Besides, how do you know his car didn’t break down or he didn’t run out of gas? On the rural roads, not a lot fo traffic at 11 at night, maybe he was walking in the middle of the road, looking for headlights to stop and help him..

You just assume the worst in the person… thank God Jesus died for your sins
So you can grow up to be such a judgemental human being.

Happy Easter. Passover. or Sunday… which ever applies to you TOM!

Who cares if he was drunk? Does that mean he deserved to die like that?
At least he wasn’t behind the wheel of a car and kill someone..

Speed limit in Joliet city limits is 25mph on some streets, 35 to 45mph on the exits like Route 6 of off I-80, my niece went to Silver Cross hospital for her cancer treatment, so I know Joliet pretty well.

And police officers like everyone else, should their eyes on the road when driving, not running plates on the computer, not talking on the phone, not talking on talkie’s unless it is a life and death situation.

Thank you for every other informative blog. The place else could I get that kind of info written in such a perfect approach? I have a project that I’m just now running on, and I have been on the glance out for such info.
