Suspect Due In Court In Officer's Shooting

CHICAGO (CBS) -- An alleged gang member accused of shooting a Chicago Police officer last week is due in court Monday.

As WBBM Newsradio's John Waelti reports, prosecutors say Paris Sadler, 20, shot Officer Del Pearson with a 9 mm handgun during a foot chase near the 8400 block of South Kingston Avenue on March 18.

Pearson was shot as he and his partner were trying to talk with four curfew violators when one of them fled into an alley. When Pearson caught up with the man who ran off, the man shot him twice.

The bullet that struck him in the shoulder severed a main artery and lodged in his neck, near his spine.

Two officers rushed Pearson to the hospital and administered first aid along the way.

Sadler is now facing attempted murder charges, while a companion, Paris Fortune, 30, is charged with unlawful use of a weapon.

Although Pearson lost two thirds of his blood and needed five hours of surgery,
he ultimately recovered and was released from Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn just nine days after the shooting.
