Road Closures In Effect For NATO Summit

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Patience is the buzzword this Saturday morning as motorists hit the roadways.

As CBS 2's Vince Gerarsole reports, in the downtown area, Lake Shore Drive was reduced only to two lanes.

Just north of Balbo Drive, the southbound Drive funnels off to one lane, and at Balbo, Chicago Department of Streets and Sanitation snow plows are lined up for several blocks to cut off access to the south.

The Drive is closed from Balbo Drive south all the way to Oakwood Boulevard, a distance of about 3 1/2 miles.

The Stevenson Expressway is also closed between the Dan Ryan Expressway junction and Lake Shore Drive. CBS 2's Derrick Young advises avoiding Lake Shore Drive and the Stevenson altogether.

The Kennedy and Dan Ryan expressways won't be trouble-free either. Rolling closures are planned on the Kennedy to accommodate motorcades for world leaders as they arrive at O'Hare International Airport.

The rolling closures may last just 5 to 10 minutes, or up to 20 minutes. Drivers are advised to be prepared, and be patient.

Meanwhile outside the Art Institute of Chicago, the streets were nearly deserted. The unofficial concierge was making jokes to passersby.

"They could not get the Monet to get Degas to get the Van Gogh," he said.
