Elderly Hoffman Estates Man Dies In Blaze At His Home

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. (STMW) -- A 90-year-old man died early Sunday in a fire at his home in northwest suburban Hoffman Estates.

Emmet Keating, 90, of the 700 block of Cumberland Street in Hoffman Estates, was pronounced dead on the scene via telemetry at 2:19 a.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

The fire was at his home, the medical examiner's office said.

Hoffman Estates firefighters responded at 1:32 a.m. to a structure fire at 795 Cumberland Street and found a single-family ranch style home with heavy smoke and fire coming from the roof and the rear, according to a release from the Hoffman Estates fire department.

One person was rescued from a bedroom and succumbed to his injuries, the release said. No one else was found inside the home but one other resident received medical care at the scene.

The home had smoke detectors but it is unclear if they were working, the release said.

Damage to the home is estimated at $375,000.
