(CBS) The Cubs announced Friday they have claimed right-handed pitcher Jairo Asencio off waivers from the Cleveland Indians.

Right-handed pitcher Michael Bowden was designated for assignment.  Asencio will join Chicago’s 25-man big league roster.

Asencio, 29, is 1-2 with a 6.05 ERA in 27 major league relief outings with Atlanta and Cleveland.  He went to spring training with the Braves this year before being acquired by Cleveland on March 29 for a cash consideration.  In 18 relief outings with the Indians this year, Asencio went 1-1 with a 5.96 ERA  before being designated for assignment on May 28.
