CHICAGO (CBS) — When it comes to nitpicking, Carrie Madej can do it with the best of them.
“When you get head lice, the lice lay eggs on your hair, and they stick on your hair like glue,” she said.
As WBBM Newsradio’s Mike Krauser reports in this week’s Made in Chicago, Madej is the owner of Nit Free Noggins, which is located in a storefront at 3704 N. Ashland Ave. in the Lakeview neighborhood. The sign out front says, “Nit-Free Noggins: single-treatment head lice solutions.”

Nit Free Noggins is a place to get yourself deloused. But Madej says she was careful not to mention lice in the name of her establishment.
“The goal was to avoid the ‘L’ word, but still give you an idea but what we do,” Madej said.
What she does is use a device called the Louse Buster to kill both lice and their eggs – the nits.
“Kind of move it around in a certain pattern,” Madej said.
It’s a simple process, using a blower with the air heated to 138 degrees.
“This device dries them out. We kind of use it in a certain pattern around the head. It takes about a half an hour,” Madej said. “But it will dry out any of the nits or bugs that are on the hair.”
The venue resembles a hair salon.
“It’s quite comfortable,” Madej said. “We try to treat one family at a time.”
She says the Louse Buster is 99;6 percent effective.
“It really is a lot simpler than the way it used to be,” Madej said.
Nit Free Noggins offers free lice checks, by appointment, for the month. The company also has a location in Wheeling.
