Most Midsize Luxury Cars Fail Crash Test

CHICAGO (CBS) -- The nation's insurance agents say their new crash test procedure has turned up problems with a number of mid-size luxury and near-luxury cars.

Only 3 of 11 midsize luxury and near-luxury cars evaluated earn good or acceptable ratings in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's new frontal crash test.

The Acura TL and Volvo S60 earned good ratings, while the Infiniti G was rated as acceptable. The Acura TSX, BMW 3 series, Lincoln MKZ and Volkswagen CC were rated marginal. The Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Lexus IS 250/350, Audi A4 and Lexus ES 350 earned poor ratings.

All of these cars are 2012 models.

The test was designed to replicate what happens when the front corner of a car collides with another vehicle or an object like a tree or utility pole, the institute said in a news release.
